Local Notes: Erris Athletic Club U12 boys relay team win gold
Winning gold medals in the U12 boys relay at the All Ireland Athletic Championships in Tullamore recently from Erris Athletic Club is Ben O’ Connor, Michael and David Walsh, Oliver Reilly and Shane Naughton. Congratulations to all.
The National Children's U9-U11 and U12 games took place in Tullamore recently. The club was represented by a fantastic bunch of girls and boys. To qualify for this national competition is a massive achievement. It took courage, determination and commitment to get to compete at that level. They should be very proud of themselves.
The club had athletes competing in relays, sprints, throwing and jumping events. It's fantastic to see the numbers of children from Erris AC attending and succeeding at national level. A huge thank you to all trainers, committee members, parents and to the athletes themselves for putting the club on the national stage.

Congratulations to Niamh Walsh from Belmullet who has earned a place on the Irish team. Niamh competed in the javelin at the Tailteann games recently in Carlow - a prestigious interprovincial event where the best U17 athletes in Ireland compete. The top two athletes in each event qualify to represent Ireland in the Schools International Athletics Championships in July. Niamh is the first athlete from Erris AC and St Brendan’s College to have the honour of representing Ireland.
Senator Malcolm Noonan travelled to Belmullet recently to meet Mayo Green Party members. Afterwards, the Senator, who sits on the Agricultural Panel in Seanad Éireann, said, “In a meeting that went on for several hours, we had a long chat over tea and Boxty about rural issues, farming, and fishing. I met with some local fishers too, concerned about their livelihoods.” The senator said it was always a treat to visit beautiful Mayo and thanked his guests for the hospitality shown to him, more especially the homemade boxty.
During a lengthy meeting, Mayo Greens chair Mícheál Ó Conaill emphasised the fact that the issues in rural Mayo are very different from those in Dublin and other cities like Cork and Limerick, and therefore the solutions must also be different.
On his way home, he made a detour to visit Wild Nephin National Park in Ballycroy, a project very close to his heart and one he is proud to have been associated with in his role as Minister of State.
Senator Noonan promised to prepare a report, raise the issues discussed with party leadership and the executive branch, and follow up on the concerns raised.

Sinn Féin TD for Mayo, Rose Conway-Walsh, has said the party will today bring forward a Dáil motion seeking major reform of dental care. Sinn Féin’s proposals put a clear focus on cutting years-long waiting lists for children, developing public dental services and reducing health costs for households.
‘Between 2019 and 2025, the number of dentists providing care on the public dental treatment services scheme in Mayo dropped from 31 to 22. Just one-third of all dentists nationally currently work on this scheme, but they have little capacity to take on new patients’.
“No patient in Mayo or elsewhere should be waiting years for dental treatment, and families should not be forced to pay privately.
