Enniscrone Castle Community Heritage project results

After an intensive research project on Enniscrone Castle, Angela Wallace, of the Heritage Sub Committee of Enniscrone and District Community Development, and Frank Hall, of University of Galway, presented their results at a public meeting in the Family Resource Centre last week.

Frank Hall conducted a thorough examination of the existing structure pointing out features people were unaware of. Dr Paul Naessens carried out an aerial LiDar survey to create 3D maps of the site area to highlight ground features people would not normally see and Philip Armstrong, a skilled archaeological artist, used the information gathered and detailed discussions to paint a fabulous picture of how Enniscrone Castle may once have looked, standing proud on the esker ridge overlooking Killala Bay.

With its four towers each with eight gunloops, and two gables with Jacobean style diamond shaped chimney stacks, dormer windowed attic, and very probably a surrounding bawn wall, it was a most impressive fortified residence.

This project was only possible due to generous funding from the Heritage Council’s Community Heritage Grant Scheme 2023.

‘It is essential that we aim to preserve our local heritage for future generations while also ensuring its structural heritage, so the Heritage Sub-committee have commissioned a Conservation Management Plan through further funding from the National Monuments Community Monument Fund 2023’ stated a spokesperson.

Wheeling in the Years for Circular Economy

If you have an old bike in the backyard that you think is destined for the scrap heap, then think again. The Enniscrone Men’s Shed is busy recycling all models of bicycles to give them a new lease of life. That might save you the expense of a new purchase, or if given as a donation, the repaired bike could make a new deserving owner very happy. Coming up to Christmas, it might be a nice way to help brighten up a child’s life. The Men’s Shed is gladly receiving the items and, with some elbow grease and know-how, the men at the Shed can refurbish the bikes as good as new.

Paul O’Sullivan, project supervisor at the Shed, says ‘people often underestimate how useful an old bike can be and how many more years it can travel if given a little tender care. Instead of chucking them in the dump, he urges people to bring their worn-out bicycles to the Enniscrone Men’s Shed. Anyone with an old yoke who would like to hand it on, or anyone keen to learn how to repair, can contact Enniscrone Men’s Shed on 087 332 9392.
