Knockmore.
The months mind Mass for the late Sr Marie Molloy was celebrated in St Michael’s Church, Foxford, on Sunday morning last at 11am. Sr Marie of the Religious Sisters of Charity, Stanhope Street, Dublin, passed away peacefully in the loving care of the staff at Catherine McCauley House, Beaumont, on Monday, February 23. Her Requiem Mass was celebrated in St Michael’s Church, Foxford, on the Thursday where she was fondly remembered as a dedicated member of her congregation, a loyal sister, and auntie.
Sr Marie or as she was fondly known as May was born on March 4,1938, to parents the late John and Mary Molloy, Boherhallagh, and the eldest of a family of three, her sister Teresa Kelly, Knockmore, and brother Sean, Boherhallagh. At the age of 10 the family tragically lost their dad and May stepped into the role of co-parenting with her mother in bringing up a family. At the age of 15 May was working in McEnroe’s Business in Foxford. At the age of 18 May worked in the Foxford Wollen Mills which was her first introduction to the pivotal work of the Sisters of Charity giving her some insight into the life of a religious.
In 1960 she joined the congregation of the Sisters of Charity in Milltown, Dublin. Over the course of her life she served her community for over 54 years in 9 different locations across the UK and Ireland. 36 of this was spent in Scotland where she made many lifelong friends. A large part of her heart was with the people of Clydebank, so much so that she was called a Bankee.
Her nephew John, on behalf of her family recalled many happy memories in the Eulogy at the end of Mass of their beloved auntie May. He spoke of how happy the family were able to spend time with her during her illness while also spending time with her fellow Sisters in Dublin recounting stories from the past and hearing more about the great work the congregation have done worldwide with a drive to educate, support and build community. It was truly inspirational and moving to hear.
It is no surprise then to hear that this love and interest in others very much extended to her family members in Mayo. Continuing John spoke of the huge and important part she was in their lives. She loved her visits home to Mayo, to her brother Sean in Boherhallagh, to her sister Teresa and Roy Kelly and family of seven, Knockmore, where she would stay. There she took great interest in all her nephew and nieces and would never miss a birthday without sending a card.
They enjoyed so many trips with her to Enniscrone, the Zoo, Knock etc; and enjoyed her at their many family occasions, graduations, weddings and christening. She was always so much fun to be with. In summarising the vocational aspect of Sr Marie’s life he said it was only fitting that all gathered here today in her native Foxford almost 65 years later from where it all began and fulfilling her wish for her final resting place. She was laid to rest in the congregation plot in the Church grounds.
Deepest sympathy is extended to the congregation of the Sisters of Charity, to her beloved sister Teresa Kelly, her brother John, her 7 Kelly nephew and nieces and to her many, many friends. May she now rest in peace of Christ.
