Local Notes: Claremorris duo help UL win title

Tuam/Oughterard Colts into All-Ireland final
Congratulations to the Tuam/Oughterard Colts RFC senior team who became the first club from Connacht to reach the Energia Women’s AIL Junior Cup final. A magnificent six-try from performance from the girls put them all their way to a 38-12 win over UL Bohemians 2nd XV in Garraun Park, Tuam.
Their tries from Hannah Clarke, two, Éabha Nic Dhonnacha, Dominika Lukasik, Karly Tierney and Katie Creaven in a brilliant attacking performance, but it was also a really good defensive performance with Beibhinn Gleeson putting in a player-of-the-match performance. Emma Burns at out-half was also outstanding.
There are six Claremorris girls on the panel with Niamh Corless, Gráinne Hahessy, Rhona O’Dea, Abigail Gibbons, Doireann Byrne and Saoirse Quinn all involved.
Tuam/Oughterard Colts will now face MU Barnhall in the All-Ireland junior cup final next month.

Red Hurley comes to town
One of Ireland’s most renowned singers, Red Hurley, will return to Claremorris Town Hall Theatre next Saturday night. Multi award-winning vocalist Red is one of the most enduring popular singers whose career has spanned several decades from the 1970s.

Camogie
Claremorris Camogie Club had their AGM on Friday, November 10 and unfortunately due to a poor turnout on the night they were unable to elect a Children’s Welfare Officer and a PRO.
A spokesperson from the club said: “I would therefore ask any parent who is willing to take on one of these positions to contact myself on 087-9284142 before Friday, December 16 so that we can have our full committee on board by the start of our new season. We would be delighted to have you on board.”
Colts duo have success with UL
Two Claremorris women helped the UL Wolves capture the SSI/IRFU Women’s Rugby Division 1A final against UCD last week. Only a few days after winning the Energia Women’s AIL Junior Cup semi-final against UL Bohemians with their club Tuam/Oughterard Colts, Niamh Corless and Rhona O’Dea started for UL Wolves as they won 29-25 on Wednesday last.
The pair were lined up alongside club teammate Éabha Nic Dhonnacha and Karly Tierney, while they were teammates with Tara Holohan, Nina Mathastein and Aisling Stock who were on the UL Bohs team that Tuam/Oughterard Colts. Well done girls!
Sean takes U17 job
Congratulations to Claremorris’ Sean Heneghan who was ratified as the Mayo U17 hurling manager for 2024 at last week’s Mayo County Board meeting.
Sean will be taking charge of Mayo for the U17 All-Ireland Celtic Challenge hurling championship next year. Heneghan will have Tooreen’s Richie Crinnigan, Ballina Stephenites Michael Bolger and John Enright from Castlebar Mitchels as selectors. Heneghan and Crinnigan have spent three years with the Mayo U15 hurling development panel reaching the final of the All-Ireland Hibernia Cup each year.
“There is great work taking place in Mayo to promote hurling at present and the hurling clubs and all our hurlers deserve all the support they can get. We currently have twelve adult hurling teams in the county up from four a few years ago and great credit must go to the clubs, coaches, teachers and indeed the Mayo hurling committee for their dedication and commitment to promoting the game,” Mayo GAA chairperson Seamus Tuohy said.
New fitness class
Galway United coach and Claremorris native Danny Broderick will be bringing the energy to your Saturday mornings as ‘Class Act’ will run on Saturdays from 10am to 11am at the Bonco gym in Lakeside Retail Park, Claremorris. This is a fun filled functional fitness class with beginner, intermediate and advanced programming. Suitable for all fitness levels. Classes are just €8.
The late Eileen Moughan (née Kelly)
The death has occurred of Eileen Moughan (née Kelly), Ballymoe, Co Galway, formerly of Cloonbulban, Bekan in the loving care of her family and staff last Wednesday at Brooklodge Nursing Home, Ballyglunin, Co Galway.
Eileen adored mother of Proinsios, Kevin, Fergal, Lorcán and Caitriona is predeceased by her deeply beloved husband Frank, her infant children Ciarán and Katie, her parents Tom and Delia Kelly and her brother Malachy and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Carol, Kathleen, Jim, Fr Michael, Tom, Christy and Peter.
Sadly missed by her loving daughter, sons, daughters-in-law Ann, Fiona, Lena and Siobhán. Also her sisters and brothers Sr Monica Kelly (Dublin), Dan and Bridie O’Connell (Dublin), Tommy and Ann Kelly (Cloonbulban), Brendan and Ann Gregg (Los Angeles), Seanie Kelly (Clifden), Angela Kelly (Birmingham), Bridie Maughan (Celbridge). Her many adored and cherished grandchildren, nephews, grand nephews, nieces, grandnieces, extended family, neighbours and friends.Funeral Mass for Eileen was held at St Croan’s Church, Ballymoe, on Friday last, with burial afterwards Kilcroan Cemetery. May Eileen’s gentle soul rest in peace.
Choir
The Roscommon Solstice Choir will host a special charity performance in Claremorris this week. The 90 Voices Christmas Concert will take place at St Colman’s Church next s at 8pm.
Admission is €10, and all proceeds will go to the St Vincent de Paul Society.
Fianna Fáil selects Claremorris candidates
Fianna Fáil have announced their two candidates to run in the Claremorris local electoral area in the 2024 local elections. Outgoing councillor Damien Ryan and Stephen Nolan have both been selected to go forward and contest next year’s elections.
Mr Nolan, who is based in Ballyhaunis, currently runs Mac Siúrtain’s pub and is a well-known businessman in the town.
Cllr Ryan is going for his sixth term as a county councillor, having been originally elected in 1999.
Handball
Well done to Niall Joyce and Paddy Murphy who competed at the Irish 40x20 nationals across Clare venues recently.
Also, well done to Mick Corley who also competed in his grade wearing the new Claremorris GAA Handball jersey. Mick was also elected as Mayo GAA Handball County secretary at last week’s AGM. Claremorris GAA Handball Club would like to wish him the best of luck in his new position.
A special mention also to Gemma O’Malley and Michael Conlon who worked as members of the Mayo GAA Handball county board over the last five years.
