Doohoma Golf Club

A great day was had recently at the Sean Gaughan Memorial Cup annual competition at Doohoma Golf Club. While the weather was challenging there was a great turnout and there was some top class golf played. A well organised and enjoyable event without question, and much thanks to the Gaughan family, Michael and David for same. Thanks also to Gabrielle for her part in the post competition barbecue. The legendary Edmund (Delaney) Gaughan scooped the top prize on the day with a fabulous score of 36 pts. Mind you, it was only by the skin of his teeth he snatched it from the experienced and relentless Eamon Mangan who posted the same score 36pts, and was only piped for the top prize after three agonising countbacks. There were much scenes of jubilation at Ed's victory, who himself was overcome with emotion and shed tears of joy at his victory, stating that he was overcome by virtue of his achievement , notwithstanding that it was achieved on his first return to competitive golf after a considerably long period of layoff. He capped his victory speech off by indicating his confidence that he would lift more of the top prizes in major competitions at Doohoma Golf Club before the golf year's end.

Many thanks to all who participated, and all who contributed to what was a memorable day's golf and a great occasion.

Results :- Winner - Edmund Gaughan 36 pts; Runner up - Eamon Mangan 36 pts; 3rd Micheál Holmes 31 pts; Nearest the pin (5) Michael Gaughan; Nearest the pin (18) Kevin Conroy; Best front 9 Dillon McAndrew; Best back 9 Dara Carey.

Outstanding Golfer

Congratulations to Belmullet Golf Club member, Cormac O’Muirithe for breaking the course record recently on the Hackett with an incredible score of 64. Cormac O'Muirithe just happens to be Stroke Player of the Year for 2023. The best 6 gross scores out of 10 qualifying competitions were taken into consideration. Cormac excelled in these competitions and with a total of 439 strokes was a clear winner this year and was in a class of his own seeing his handicap drop to +2 in the process, another significant milestone that deserves huge recognition.

Two stories from Erris Gaeltacht School student in print

Gaeilge Iorrais would like to congratulate each of the 83 students from all 7 Gaeltacht scheme primary schools in Erris that took part in the collaborative creative writing project entitled 'Scaip an Scéal' recently. 'Scaip an Scéal' is a storytelling initiative i nGaeilge for primary schools from Fighting Words. The students create a story from scratch, drawing on their own imagination, local heritage and environment. Children from one school create the first chapter of a new story. This story is then passed on from school to school, with new students adding another chapter to the story each time. Pupils from the following Gaeltacht schools - Dumha Thuama, Scoil Bhreandáin, Eachléim, Corrchloch, Poll an tSómais, Gleann na Muaidhe, Ros Dumhach and Ceathrú Thaidhg - composed two new stories ('Turas thar Iorras' and ‘Barry an tÉan is Fearr ar Domhan’) as part of this initiative, which was co-ordinated by Gaeilge Iorrais. Maith iad go léir! Katherine Mangan (co-author of 'An Bumbóg Mhór Bhuí ar Strae') launched the children's new book 'Scaip an Scéal i nGaeltacht Iorrais' at a special event organized by Gaeilge Iorrais in Áras Inis Gluaire on Thursday, June 20. Bríd-Treasa Wyndham (Fighting Words na Gaeltachta) and Laoise Ní Dhúda (Gaeilge Iorrais) also briefly spoke to congratulate, praise and encourage these talented young writers and their teachers.

A copy of the book was presented to each student from Gaeltacht primary schools in Erris who participated in this project. All thoroughly enjoyed this celebratory event for students and their teachers, which also marked the end of another busy school year in Erris Gaeltacht scheme schools.

Gaeilge Iorrais thank all that helped to successfully bring this project to completion, including Bríd-Treasa Wyndham (Fighting Words), Shaun McFadden agus Aisling Ní Éilí (artists that provided fabulous illustrations for the newly composed stories), principals, teachers and cúntóirí teanga from all Gaeltacht schools in Erris, Éimear Ní Ghallachóir (Gaeilge Iorrais) that prepared the electronic version of the stories which can be viewed online.

‘We hope that both young and old will enjoy reading these newly created stories i nGaeilge which are full of adventure, humour and fun. We also hope that this positive experience will encourage these talented students to continue with scéalaíocht, creative writing and further collaborative endeavours i nGaeilge’ stated a spokesperson for Gaeilge Iorrais.

Legislation to protect student renters

Mayo Sinn Féin TD has today called on the government to support Sinn Féin’s legislation to protect student renters. The Residential Tenancies (Amendment) Bill 2024 will be debated at second stage in the Dáil on Tuesday.

Teachta Conway-Walsh said: “We are looking to bring to order to so-called “digs” accommodation where students rent a room in someone’s home as part of the “rent a room” scheme. Despite this state scheme providing tax relief of up to €14,000 a year, there are no obligations to give even basic protections to students renting the room.

Threshold has pointed out that those renting such rooms have ‘effectively have no rights. This means no right to a rent book, or a notice period meaning the student can be evicted overnight. No rights to privacy such as a lock on the bedroom door which is a real concern for young women. No rights to reasonable use of facilities like the kitchen and bathroom. No access to the rent pressure zones, or prevention of the rent being increased overnight without notice. No access for either party (student or homeowner) to the RTB for dispute resolution’.

‘Many students report having had good experiences in this kind of digs accommodation, but there have also been some horror stories. That is why this bill is necessary. Not only does it give protections for student renters, but it also gives protection to the homeowners. It creates obligations on the student renters to pay their rent on time and in full, that they do not engage in anti-social behaviour or damage the property’.

‘This bill gives greater protection, certainty and support for both parties to these housing arrangements. It is only fair that this tax subsidy comes with some protections for those students renting the rooms’.
