U14’s cruise to victory

Charlestown Sarsfields enjoyed a comfortable 6-9 to 3-6 victory over Swinford in round one of the East Mayo U-14A championship played at Fr O’Hara Park recently. The Sarsfields were in control for the most part throughout but endured some tough moments in either half but had no quality to overcome the difficulties posed by a gusty Swinford side who battled gamely to the final whistle.

The Sarsfields were seven clear at the interval and were good value for their lead for the most part with two first half goals from Adam Doherty giving them a measure of control. Swinford struck for a goal of their own early in the second half to hint at a revival but this was quashed minutes later when Adam Hunt banged in a super strike for the Sarsfields to wrestle back control with the Sarsfields able to manage the game well from there to the final whistle.

It was a night to remember for young Adam Doherty as he bagged four goals in what was a terrific night for the young maestro and one he will remember for many a long day.

A good performance from the Sarsfields young tyros and one which augurs well for the remainder of their campaign as they await the winners of the Kiltimagh v Swinford in the next round of the competition.

Sarsfields misfire against Parke

For the second week in succession the Sarsfields came out on the wrong side of a 0-11 to 2-4 score line as they came up short once again in round 6 of the county senior league against Parke/Keelogues/Crimlin in a topsy turvy encounter played at the Parke GAA grounds.

This defeat leaves the Sarsfields in a somewhat perilous position as they hover near the foot of the table with some key games coming up against the teams immediately below them.

In the final analysis they will be wondering how they didn’t get something from a match they enjoyed the lion’s share of the possession of in the second period as they dragged themselves off the canvas having found themselves six points in arrears at the first whistle.

Both teams were somewhat depleted with the Sarsfields particularly so in their forward line with the final score an obvious indication of their shortcomings in attack as they contrived to butcher some wonderful scoring chances in the latter stages of the game which would come back to bite them in a big way as the hosts claimed the two valuable points to move ahead of the Sarsfields in the league standings.

The Sarsfields started well enough as they kept the hosts on a tight rein in the opening ten minutes albeit Parke’s shooting left a lot to be desired as they kicked a bundle of wides from very advantageous scoring positions.

Ruairi Cullen kicked the Sarsfields ahead with a terrific score with Parke finally opening their account two minutes later. The hosts kicked the next two scores to open up a two point lead before Cullen kicked another beauty for the Sarsfields to keep them in contention as the exchanges cranked up a notch or two.

It was Parke who seized control however in some style as they kicked a clatter of fine points to leave the Sarsfields trailing in their wake as they stacked up five white flags without reply to leave the Sarsfields floudering 0-8 to 0-2 in arrears at the interval and in all kinds of trouble it must be said as the black and amber were in charge in all the key pressure points on the field.

It was hard to see how the Sarsfields could navigate their way back into the game after their first half fade out but to their credit they presented a much more formidable challenge in the second half and fronted up and played with much more cojones and spirit.

Ruairi Cullen kicked a good score, his third of the night, to launch their second half revival with Niall Fleming guiding over a mark a few minutes later to bring the gap back to four.

The Sarsfields kicked some poor wides in between those two points but they were in control in the middle third with Paddy Goldrick in particular fielding and carrying with impressive intent ably assisted by Gareth O’Donnell as midfield became a very fertile area for the green and white.

That man Goldrick put the cat among the pigeons ten minutes in when he burst forward from midfield, taking a good pass from Alan Woods to blast the ball to the net and leave just one between the sides as Parke struggled to get any kind of a foothold in the game with the Sarsfields firmly in the ascendency.

The Sarsfields failed to kick on however, kicking a plethora of wides before Parke finally lifted the siege with two points on the bounce to push the lead back out to three with ten left to go. The Sarsfields fought back with admirable spirit however with veteran David Caffrey taking the fight to the opposition with a sixty yard run that eventually ended up in him being upended in the small square with referee Vincent Neary pointing to the spot and awarding a penalty to the green and white.

Gareth O’Donnell dispatched the kick to the net in expert fashion to bring the scores level with everything up for grabs. The Sarsfields failed to capitalise however as shots drifted every which way but through the posts which sapped the confidence levels as the forward division just couldn`t guide one between the posts to stay ahead or level.

Parke, too had their fault lines in front of goal, kicking some poor wides but they did manage to kick one between the posts in the frantic closing stages to edge one ahead as the Sarsfields kicking became ever more wayward with audible groans of frustration greeting every kick that failed to find the target.

The final whistle brought contrasting fortunes in both camps with Parke ecstatic to have secured the win with the Sarsfields left to pick the bones over a dispiriting defeat that could and should have seen them get something from a much more positive and spirited second half display.

Their best players were all in defence and at midfield with Paddy Goldrick, Ruairi Cullen, Gerry and Enda McLoughlin, David Caffrey, Paddy Walsh, Gareth O`Donnell, Fergal Quinn, Ben Conway and Niall Drudy all performing powerfully and taking the fight to Parke when the game looked to be gone from them at half-time.

U14 girls win Division 1 league final

Well done to the Charlestown Sarsfields U14 girls team who captured the division one league title in great style with a thrilling 5-11 to 5-7 victory over a very good and gallant Kilmaine team in a thrilling final played at Fr O’Hara Park, Charlestown recently.

This was a cracking contest from the get go with goals very much the currency of the day as the two teams went all out attack and set a cracking pace throughout. The Sarsfields had to be at their best to withstand a Kilmaine side that had a very potent attack with the green and white having to dig deep to see off a very determined and spirited South Mayo challenge that remained live and persistent right to the final whistle.

The Sarsfields too, had a very dynamic forward line and it was just as well they had as Kilmaine kept responding when the Sarsfields looked to have taken control of the game at several stages in the second half. The Charlestown girls showed commendable tenacity to get the job done however as they hung on gamely in the closing stages with Kilmaine throwing everything at them in a bid to get level or in front.

Another very good day for the ladies club and full credit to the management team who had the girls well prepared all throughout the campaign and had them in the best possible shape with a division one title a notable achievement considering the calibre of teams they were pitted against in what was an ultra-competitive competition.

All eyes now turn to the championship where the girls will be going all out to do the double which looks well within their capabilities.

Juniors endure a tough day at the office

Charlestown Sarsfields junior team were well beaten in their latest outing in division 3B of the county senior league as Davitts put them to the sword with a very convincing display as they ran up a big score in the process.

There were mitigating circumstances for the Sarsfields however as injuries decimated their line-up with up to ten players unavailable for selection which left management in a very compromised position and left them staring down the barrel from the throw-in.

Davitts were in no mood to look a gift horse in the mouth and duly took full advantage of the Sarsfields weakened hand and had the game put to bed long before the final whistle.

The Sarsfields, to be fair, kept at it right to the bitter end but they were no match for a rampant home side who banged in the goals early doors thus taking competitive element out of the game as the Sarsfields struggled to tame the black and red wave that swept towards their goal with relentless regularity.

A tough day at the office for all associated with the green and white but one which can be put down to an injury riven panel which has left the team and management playing with effectively one hand tied behind their back.

Darts

There was a good turnout at the weekly darts competition held in Walsh’s Bar, Main Street, Charlestown on Sunday night, June 16, as Podsie and Boom Boom fought out another gritty instalment of the weekly classic. Governor Gus was immense as ever in his role as match referee, keeping both protagonists firmly in check throughout. This was the latest big game clash between two men with a long and storied history of final rivalry.

Podsie made the better start, racing into a one set lead with some sizzling finishing, Boom Boom hit back to win the next set as he found his range among the doubles but Podsie regained control in the third set, closing it out with a neat treble eighteen, double sixteen finish to move two set to one ahead. The fourth set was an epic with both men throwing well simultaneously. Boom Boom looked to have it secured when he stood over double top with two darts in his hand as well as holding a two legs to one lead. He inexplicably missed the double with both his darts to pave the way for Podsie to set forward and claim the leg as he nailed double 12 with his final dart. The fifth and deciding leg was another see-saw affair which Podsie eventually claimed as he pierced the bulls eye with his final dart to seal a terrific victory with Boom Boom left to rue the two darts he spurned at double sixteen to extend the match to a fifth set. Both men shared a warm handshake at the end of a good contest with Podsie delighted to seal his seventh title of the season with Boom Boom left to lick his wounds once again at another near miss in a decider.
