Local Notes: Celebration for Claremorris store manager

Local Notes: Celebration for Claremorris store manager

Eilish Mulvilhill, store manager, Aldi, Claremorris, celebrates with colleagues after she marked 20 years with the company, 17 of them in Claremorris.

Congratulations are extended to Eilish Mulvihill, the manager of the Aldi store in Claremorris, who celebrated 20 years with the company last week.

Eilish, who is originally from Ballincrossig, Causeway, Co Kerry, initially worked for three years at the Castlebar store before moving to Claremorris, and has been manager since the local branch opened in 2007.

Staff describe Eilish as a very friendly and kind manager and a pleasure to work with. Customers know Eilish for her politeness, smile and helpfulness, which is the hallmark of the staff at the store. Eilish is obviously setting the example, which is carried through by all the staff.

Eilish originally arrived in Mayo to study at the then GMIT campus in Castlebar. When she successfully completed her degree in heritage studies, Eilish took a job with Aldi. She instantly liked the company and has stayed with them ever since.

There was a presentation to mark Eilish’s commitment and 20 years of service at the Claremorris store last week, with Donald MacKay, Managing Director, Aldi Ireland and UK and Mark Johnson, Store Operations Director, in attendance.

Eilish lives in Westport and welcomes the opening of the new road which has significantly shortened her commute time.

The community wishes Eilish and all the Aldi team the best for the future.

Good win for GAA Seniors

Claremorris GAA club had a fine win in the opening round of the Mayo Senior Championship when they overcame Belmullet by 0-21 to 2-13 last week.

The team has generated a new excitement with the quality of the younger players coming through, and they didn’t disappoint the huge local crowd. The youngest player on the field, 17-year old Darragh Beirne, put on an outstanding display scoring seven points – five of them from open play. Beirne was unmarkable, especially in the second half and put in a man-of-the-match performance.

The other scorers were Niall Hurley 0-5, Paul Gilmore 0-2, James Shaughnessy, Conor McGuinness, David O’Reilly, Darragh Fallon, Cathal Joyce, Padraig Cummins and Rio Mortimer, all of whom scored a point each. The team face another tough challenge when they travel to Knockmore on Saturday to meet the locals in round two of their Group Three campaign. Knockmore surprisingly lost their opening match to Ballaghaderreen by a point.

The late John Fitzpatrick

The town was saddened to hear of the passing of John Fitzpatrick, of Barr na Haille, last week.

John died peacefully at Mayo University Hospital, surrounded by his family. He was predeceased by his parents Michael and Mary, his brothers Michael and Martin Tim, and will be sadly missed by his wife Dympna, son Alan, brother James, sisters in the United Kingdom Chris, Rita, Anna, Kathleen, Teresa and Patricia (Donegal), brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

John was laid to rest in St Colman’s Cemetery following Funeral Mass on Monday, August 19th.

Another Heaney 50/50 win

The winner of last week’s GAA 50/50 was Sarah Heaney who won €802, with the winning entry sold in PJ Byrne's.

Sarah comes from a family of 50/50 winners in Meelickmore. Her brother Donal won €2,141 on the August bank holiday draw and another brother, Seán, won €866 in April. Their mother, Carmel, won the draw a few years ago.

The 50/50 draw means there are winners every week, with the club knowing exactly what its income from the draw is, and the winnings usually going back into the community, or in this case the same family. The club uses the funds to part-finance the running of their pitches and many teams across all age groups.
