On Wednesday, February 5, the Ballinrobe Community School 2nd year girls debating team of Jane Naughton, Katie Owens and Katrina Mratskova, took part in the Galway University Women Graduates' Association public speaking competition in the McMunn Theatre, in the University of Galway. All three girls spoke excellently and received certificates of achievement to mark the occasion.
Team member Katrina Mratskova also won overall Best Individual Speaker and will go on to represent Ballinrobe Community School in the national final in March. Well done to all involved.
Ballinrobe Town AFC thank everyone who supported the club’s bucket collection which was held throughout the town on Saturday, February 8, and was in aid of the Club Development Fund. Well done to Ballinrobe Town’s Caitlin Cummins, the Mayo League U12 schoolgirls captain, who was part of the Mayo side which recently defeated Roscommon 3-2 in Leecarrow. This was the final group game for Mayo and the victory ensured top place in the group for the green and red.
The Ballinrobe Town Junior (A) men’s team recorded a hard-fought 3-1 victory against Glenhest Rovers in round one of the Mayo League Super Cup, which was played at Umbro Park, Milebush, on Sunday, February 9. The tie, which was Chris McGauley’s first competitive outing as the new Ballinrobe Town (A) manager, was played on the excellent 4G pitch and a fast paced game kept both sets of supporters entertained. Just before the break, Ballinrobe were awarded a penalty and Jonathan Lawrence was coolness personified from the spot-kick to shunt Ballinrobe into a 1-0 interval lead.
The opening exchanges of the second period were keenly contested, however, Ballinrobe further enhanced their lead on 60 minutes, when the poaching Sean Vahey pounced on a loose ball and finished with aplomb, much to the delight of his team-mates.
With just five minutes of normal time remaining, the Robesiders sealed the deal courtesy of a tidy finish by Matthew Walshe. A doughty Glenhest did manage to net a late consolation goal courtesy of Eoin Wright, but it was Ballinrobe who claimed the spoils and the Red and White can now look forward to a Super Cup semi-final clash away to Ballyheane.
The Ballinrobe Town junior men’s (B) team were on the right end of an eight goal thriller away to Crossmolina (B), on Sunday week last, with the visitors recording a terrific 5-3 victory. The South Mayo men made a blistering start and blitzed Crossmolina with four goals inside the opening 20 minutes, courtesy of a brace from the in-form Johnny Burke, and a goal piece from Adam Thornton and Conor Keleghan.
Crossmolina’s Clive Muldoon pulled a goal back on 41 minutes, but the hosts faced an uphill battle during the second half, as they trailed 4-1 at the interval. Muldoon further reduced the deficit on 53 minutes, however, Ballinrobe’s progression to the next round was confirmed when Danny O’Toole notched the fifth goal for his team-mates on 61 minutes, thus rendering Billy Loftus’s late strike for the hosts as a mere consolation effort. Ballinrobe Town (B) will have the luxury of a home tie in the McDonnell Cup semi-final when they welcome Glenhest Rovers (B) to The Green.

Round one fixtures will commence during the weekend of March 14 - 16. Ballinrobe’s opening fixture will take place during the weekend of March 21 -23, when the Robesiders face an away clash against Garrymore.
Ballinrobe’s Connacht Junior Cup dreams were dashed by Creggs on Sunday week last at The Green, as the visitors recorded a 25-17 victory to book their provincial final ticket. Creggs led 10-7 at the break, and despite the visitors dominating large chunks of possession during the second half, the Ballinrobe defensive unit produced a doughty display. However, Creggs guile and creativity would prove vital in the end and the visitor’s tries on the day were notched by Tom Farrell (2), Shane Dowd, and Mark Dowd.
Ballinrobe’s five-pointers were acquired by Dylan Keane, and the busy James McTigue. Overall, Creggs were the better side on the day and they will now meet Dunmore in the Connacht Junior Cup final, which is set to take place in Ballina.
The club held its weekly 50/50 draw on Sunday week last, with Michael Naughton the lucky winner of €720.
There was no winner of the €6,900 lotto jackpot draw which was held in Garrymore, on Sunday, February 9. The numbers drawn were 6, 20, 26 and 28. The €50 winners were Colm Hession, Pulbawn, Bernard Dolan, Roose, and Breda Jordan, Seefin.

Most community groups (approx. 19) have their representatives on the community council but if by any chance your group does not, you can contact any present representative and they will assist you with arranging same. The council’s focus is on the community facilities development and the community are delighted to have purchased an extensive site to date with all the funds raised through tremendous community support for various events. Several financial building grant aids have been applied for, but the council will have to prove they have a percentage in funds should any grant be approved/allocated.

People are also encouraged to sing on their own to give them confidence, and many budding singers and musicians have evolved from this fantastic group. The Rambling House is managed by Mary McDonnell with help from others and all are most welcome to attend on any night and do bring a friend.
