National Boxing Title for Ursula Shaughnessy

Having suffered heartache in National finals in 2022 and 2023, it was a case of third time lucky for Ballinrobe’s Ursula Shaughnessy when she was crowned the 80kg National Junior 1 Champion in the National Stadium, Dublin, on Saturday last.

Ursula faced tough opposition against Rathnew’s Molly Higgins and the talented Ballinrobe boxer had to dig deep in what was an excellent boxing match.

After a titanic battle, Ursula was declared the winner on a split decision of 4/1 in her favour.

Ursula’s hard work, dedication and commitment paid dividends in the end and it was a memorable and cherished day for her family and supporters who made the trip to the National Stadium. Ursula is coached by James Butler and Patrick Burke from Ballinrobe Boxing Club.

The talented Ballinrobe teenager didn’t rest on her laurels and the day after claiming a national boxing title, Ursula netted a hat-trick in Ballinrobe Town’s 4-1 victory away to Conn Rangers in a Mayo Women’s U17 League Division One fixture. Then, on Tuesday, April 16, Ursula won a Connacht (B) Schools soccer medal and netted a goal in Ballinrobe Community Schools 6-1 victory over St Enda’s of Galway.

Indeed, it has been quite the month for Ursula, as she also played a starring role in Ballinrobe Community School’s Lidl All-Ireland Junior (C) final victory against St. Mary’s Macroom, on March 15. Well done Ursula from all your friends and supporters.

Ballinrobe Community School crowned Connacht Champions

Heartiest congratulations to the Ballinrobe Community School U20 girls’ soccer team who were crowned Connacht (B) Champions on Tuesday, April 16, after they defeated St Enda’s of Galway 6-1. The game took place in the RedRock Arena in Moyne Villa, Headford, and the south Mayo side were backed by a vocal band of supporters.

Ballinrobe were quickest out of the blocks and Emma Dowling netted the opening goal of the game for the Pink and Black after just eight minutes.

Dowling was on song for the Robesiders and she plundered a second goal after 28 minutes, to help give her team-mates a healthy 2-0 lead during the half-time pep-talks.

There was no let-up from a goal hungry Ballinrobe and some brilliant team work during the second half resulted in further goals arriving courtesy of Ursula Shaughnessy, Róise Burke, Emma Dowling (her hat-trick) and captain fantastic Maura Hughes.

The Salthill outfit did manage to salvage a consolation strike during the second period; however, there can be no denying that Ballinrobe were the better team on the day and deserving Connacht champions. Overall it was a great team performance by Ballinrobe, with hat-trick hero Emma Dowling just shading the player of the match accolade.
