Wheelchair Basketball summer sessions will commence today, July 30, from 6 to 7pm in the Lakeside Sport and Fitness Centre, Station Road, Ballinrobe. This is a four week programme and is being run by the Lakeside Lakers Basketball Club and in conjunction with Mayo Sports Partnership. The Lake District Athletic Club enjoyed a stellar weekend on July 20/21 as some of their athletes scooped major honours at the Athletics Ireland All-Ireland Championships, which were held in Tullamore. The award winners from the South Mayo club were as follows: Keane Hughes (800m Bronze); Fionn Jennings (Javelin Silver); Barry Langan (Javelin Gold); Aaron Crowley (Javelin Gold); Ben Place (Javelin Bronze); Liam Lynch (Javelin Silver). Well done to all the athletes representing the club and a special word of thanks must also go to all the coaches and parents who support the athletes.
The 66th World Cup Trout Fly Angling Championship will take place at picturesque Lough Mask, during the August Bank Holiday weekend, July 31 to August 4.
This prestigious competition draws anglers from Ireland and overseas, with Ballinrobe a hive of activity during this period. Qualifiers from the heats on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, will be hoping to be in with a chance of securing the coveted prizes in Sunday’s final.
The first prize is the World Silver (Perpetual) Cup and a 19’ Lake Boat (sponsored by Gareth Foley and World Cup Committee), 15HP Yamaha Engine (sponsored by RS Marine and World Cup Committee), and a Sage Fly Rod (sponsored by Gowan and Bradshaw, Galway, and World Cup Committee). Second prize is a 9.9HP Yamaha Engine (Sponsored by RS Marine and World Cup Committee), Sage Rod (sponsored by McHale Engineering, Ballinrobe), Sage Fly Reel (sponsored by Gowan and Bradshaw, Galway, and World Cup Committee), and The Harnesse Cup. Third prize is a 6HP Yamaha (sponsored by World Cup Committee), and a Boat Seat (sponsored by P. Monaghan).
The competitor landing the heaviest fish will receive a cash prize of €1,000, sponsored by the World Cup Committee, a watch sponsored by Martin Murphy’s Newsagent, and the Luke Higgins Cup.
Prizes will be bestowed on competitors that finish up to 12th position, and there will also be special category prizes such as Best Overseas Angler, Lady with the Heaviest Catch, and the Best Junior (U21) competitor, heat winners, and the winning boatmen.

The XVAcademy summer camp will take place in The Green, Ballinrobe, and will run for four days from August 20 to August 23, and follows on from the hugely successful June Bank Holiday Monday camp held at the venue. The daily camp involves three hours of high performance training each day, with a team of XVAcademy coaches. They operate a small group session model, with a great coach to player ratio.
If your son or daughter, born 2009 - 2018, wants to improve not only their skills, but their confidence on the ball - then this camp is suitable for them.

There was no winner of the €24,000 lotto jackpot draw which was held in Fitzpatrick’s Bar (Inch’s), on Monday, July 22. The numbers drawn were 13, 15, 18 and 29. The €25 winners were Sean O’Connell, and Assumpta Quinn.
Ballinrobe Rugby Club is currently looking for coaches to coach their youth players ahead of the upcoming season. No previous experience of coaching is required and courses and training will be provided. The teams range from U6 to U18. Those interested are asked to visit the club’s Facebook page and clink on the link to fill out the required form.
Last Tuesday afternoon at The Green, two Connacht rugby girls’ teams were in pre-season action, as both the provinces U16 and U18 teams faced the touring Eagle Impact Rugby Academy (a United States American development team).
In the first game the EIRA U16 girls’ team defeated Connacht 20-17 in what was a highly competitive fixture, with the touring American side displaying plenty of skill and determination to edge proceedings.
In the second fixture, Ballinrobe’s Faith Durkin lined out and captained the Connacht U18 girls ‘team against EIRA, and it proved to be a memorable day for Faith and her team-mates, as they recorded a marvellous 27-5 victory. The Connacht U18 team is coached by former Ballinrobe junior player and coach, Craig Hansberry.
It was a proud day for Ballinrobe to host two prestigious matches and will long in the memory of all associated with the club.

Please keep in mind that next weekend the August Bank Holiday will be a busy one in Islandeady for all family, friends and holidaymakers. The Annual Islandeady Fun Run/Walk takes place on Saturday, August 3 at 10am from Jack’s Cottage. It is open to everyone of all ages and abilities to participate. There is a 5k and 10k options available. The fee is €20/Early bird registration will be €15. All money raised will be donated to Islandeady Community Council and Islandeady GAA/LGFA. In preparation for the Annual Cemetery Masses on August 3 and 4, families are kindly asked to maintain their graves and if you can attend to graves either side of yours that have no family to care for them. Families are asked to remove all withered flowers and artificial wreaths in poor condition. Cemetery weekend offertory collection will go towards maintenance and improvements at the cemeteries.
Glenisland Cemetery Mass will take place at 7pm on Saturday, August 3; and Islandeady Cemetery Mass will take place at 11am on Sunday, August 4.
A 45 minute fitness classes with Lisa continue on Thursday evenings in Islandeady Community Centre. A fat burning workout at 6.15pm and a slow relaxed pilates at 7.15pm; Islandeady GAA/LGFA underage academy training every Saturday morning from 9.30am –10.30am for boys and girls from U6 – U12. The site for the new community centre has been cleared and the timber cleared from the site is nicely piled and now available for sale. The Islandeady Development Company CLG is selling the timber as 1 lot to the best bid. The timber must be removed from site by September 1. Islandeady Walks Group met Monday, July 22, at Jack’s Cottage at 7pm and walked the August Fun Run/Walk in reverse direction. It was a very enjoyable walk, and everyone is looking forward to bringing friends and family out again on Saturday, August 3. The group appreciate the hospitality of Joe and Irene in Jack’s Cottage once more for the tea and refreshments on their return.
The rraveyard committee would like to identify the final resting places of parishioners in the old part of Glenisland Cemetery. There probably is no correct time to do such an activity, but as time progresses there is a concern that knowledge could be lost.
