Beezneez night of comedy

John McDwyer’s new comedy ‘The Pension Plan’ is coming to Ballina next month, presented by Beezneez Theatre Company.

The Sligo-born playwright is known for his superbly crafted stories. Many of his works are in the comedy genre, such as ‘Unforgiven’ and ‘Turning Mammy’, while plays like ‘United’ deal with more serious topics.

‘The Pension Plan’ is a story about the bachelor Flanagan brothers who live a life of peaceful contentment on their hillside farm, bothered only by the persistent efforts of their spinster neighbour, Ann Catherine, to marry either or both of them. The brothers’ tranquil existence is disturbed by a visiting stranger who brings news that threatens to turn their world upside down. Salvation may come from an unlikely source, but at what price?

Beezneez Theatre Company is an ad hoc theatre company based in Carrick-on-Shannon which, since its formation in 1997, has become one of the most popular touring theatre companies in Ireland.

The cast of four includes actors who are well-known to Ballina audiences. The author himself will direct Barry Deignan, Gerry Farrell, Pat Feeley and Valerie Traynor in an evening of madcap fun at Ballina Arts Centre on Tuesday, July 9th, at 8pm.

Competition for filmmakers

Ballina Fringe Festival is set to take place this year from October 3 to 13 at various venues across the town, and with even more events taking place during the 2024 festival than in previous years.

One of the highlights will be the hosting of the DiViPassion International Short Film Festival, traditionally held in Athis-Mons, in the suburbs of Paris.

Celebrating 15 years in 2024, this annual festival has welcomed filmmakers from a variety of countries, and has established links with Athis-Mons’s twin towns such as Ballina, Rothenburg in Germany and Sinaia in Romania.

But this year the short film festival will take place in Ballina Arts Centre on Saturday, October 12, as part of the 2024 Ballina Fringe Festival.

The festival aims to support self-made films, to help local cultures become known beyond their own place, and to assist in making the knowledge of video production available to all. It brings amateur filmmakers and cinema enthusiasts together in a friendly and congenial environment.

The festival is open to all non-professional productions. Filmmakers can be individuals, legal entities or organisations. In particular, the event endeavours to support youth productions, whether as filmmakers or as actors.

Film categories include fiction, animated and non-fiction, up to a maximum of 15 minutes in length and on any theme.

Entry is free for those under 25 years of age, but there is a €10 per film fee for those over that age.

A filmmaker may submit several films, but a maximum of two will be chosen by the selection committee for participation in the competition.

An adjudication committee composed of members of Ballina Fringe Festival and DiViPassion, which is a French-registered non-profit organisation, will make a pre-selection of films based on all submissions. These pre-selected films, from all genres, compete for an award.

Participants will be informed of the outcome of the selection process before the festival.

The deadline for submissions is September 15 and more details are available now from the Ballina Fringe Festival Facebook page.

Sounds of music mark 60th festival

Rehearsals are currently underway for the production ‘Remembering The Sound of Music’, which will be presented as part of this year’s Ballina Salmon Festival.

Marking 60 years since the festival was first established, this delightful show recalls the story of the real-life Von Trapp Family Singers from Austria. Filming took place in Austria in 1964, the same year in which Ballina Salmon Festival began its ground-breaking journey to become one of the biggest annual community festivals in the West of Ireland.

Lots of well-known local faces will bring the songs of Rodgers and Hammerstein to the stage of Ballina Arts Centre on Monday, July 8. The film version of the musical won five Academy Awards, became the highest-grossing film of all time one year after it was released, and is consistently voted one of the most popular musicals ever made.

Tickets for the show, which starts at 8pm, are priced at €15. Tickets can be booked online at www.ballinaartscentre.com. You can also call 096-73593 or email info@ballinaartscentre.com.

Seanchaí returns to Ballina

The Jackie Clarke Collection, Ballina and The National Heritage Day committee of Ballina Salmon Festival 2024 have partnered together to bring renowned seanchaí Edmund Lenihan back to Ballina.

Seanchaíthe are the custodians of tradition, reciters of ancient Irish lore and traditional storytellers, and Edmund is one of the few practising seanchaí remaining in Ireland. In ancient times, seanchaíthe served the clan chiefs by sharing their tales around a fire. Each storyteller told their tales with their own flair and dialect. Many cultures did not write their tales down, so they were told orally.

As one of the last remaining seanchaí in Ireland, Edmund Lenihan is keenly in tune with the mythical beauty of our amazing and mysteriously magical island. He is also author, lecturer and broadcaster, and has been called one of the greatest of Irish storytellers and a national treasure.

Watch out for Edmund’s performance times in Ballina on the Jackie Clarke Collection Facebook Page.
