Swinford AC held the annual Hope Rose 5km Run on December 27. This event takes place each year in Midfield in memory of Hope Rose Caulfield. A total of €2,909 was collected and donated to Cancer Care West. KCC 50/50 draw

Congratulations to Ann Nash who was the winner of the December Killasser Community Centre 50/50 draw winning €1,000. €20 spot prize winners were Eugene Hussey and Kaz Szatkowski. The January 2024 draw will be held on Saturday, February 3.

Drama Group

A meeting of Charlestown Drama Group will be held in the Arts Centre on Thursday, January 25, at 8pm. If you are interested in joining the group, you are invited to come along on the night. No experience necessary.

Make a St Brigid’s Cross

Get ready for St Brigid’s Day with a free, drop-in activity to make a St Brigid’s Cross, from 2 to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday, January 27 and 28, at the National Museum of Ireland – Country Life, Turlough Park, Castlebar. See some different styles of St Brigid’s Crosses on display and have a go at making your own cross to bring home. There will also be free guided tours at 2 and 3pm on both days, with a special focus on objects, customs and traditions associated with St Brigid. See www.museum.ie for further information.

Recycle your Christmas cards

Join a free drop-in session with the Connacht Textile Crafters from 11.30am to 3pm on Saturday, January 27, at the National Museum of Ireland – Country Life, Turlough Park, Castlebar. See some creative and sustainable ideas to re-use Christmas cards. The Connacht Textile Crafters are a group of talented craft workers and artists from across the region. This demonstration takes place in the workshop rooms in the Courtyard (beside the café). No booking required.

Lotto

The numbers drawn in the Swinford Community Lotto draw held on January 15, were; 7, 8, 13 and 18. There was no jackpot winner. €70 vouchers were won by Mary Durkan, Derryronane and Antáine MacDhurcáin, Derryronane; €35 was won by Georgie McNulty, Esker Swinford. The jackpot is now €10,000.

Killasser Parish 25 Drive

Thank you to all the participants, sponsors and helpers who supported the Killasser Parish 25 Card Drive on December 18. The €525 proceeds will be shared between Killasser Community Care and Killasser Community Centre.

Killasser Village improvements

The construction of kerbing on the Swinford approach to Killasser village took place before Christmas. The kerbing defines the road width, junction definition and associated parallel parking. The plan is to concrete this area and to plant two commemorative trees with a flower planter or seat in the next month or so. If anyone is interested in sponsoring a tree, contact a member of the committee. A tree will cost €400 and it covers the cost of the tree, a tree grill, labour and a personalised name plate. The flower planter or seat will cost €250.

KCC AGM

The Killasser Community Centre annual general meeting is scheduled to take place on Friday, February 9, at 8pm in Killasser Community Centre. New committee members also welcome.

Golf Club Cards

Results from the game played on Thursday, January 11, were; 1st and 2nd prize was shared by Mary Lynskey, Michael Lynskey, Tom Durkan and Philip Moore; 3rd prize was won by Martin McNeela and Marty Munnelly. Raffle prizes were won by Esther Munnelly, Josie Prendergast, Eileen Geraghty and Noreen Geraghty. The game continues every Thursday night in Swinford Golf Club at 9pm 

Diocesan Celebration

To mark St Valentine’s Day, Bishop Paul Dempsey will lead a Service of Blessing for engaged couples and those marking significant anniversaries during 2024 in the Cathedral in Ballaghaderreen on Sunday, February 18, at 4pm. All engaged couples and those marking significant wedding anniversaries are invited to attend.

Meelick Card results

Results of the game played on Tuesday, January 16, in Meelick Community Centre are as follows; card winners were Seamus Conwell, Eileen Geraghty, Michael O’Neill, John Gallagher, Noreen Geraghty, Dette Ryder, Martin McDonagh and Mike McDonagh. Raffle prizes were won by Ann Rowley, Francie Rowley, Matt Duggan, Phyllis Bredican, John Gallagher and Michael Lynskey. The game continues every Tuesday night at 9pm.

GAA 50/50 draw

Congratulations to Shay Rafter of London and Glenamoy who was last week’s winner of the Swinford GAA 50/50 draw held in Moores winning €418. Shay bought his entry in the Sheepwalk Bar. The next draw will be on Tuesday, January 23, in Horkans. Entries are available through SwinfordGAA.ie, Foireann, Clubspot and throughout town.

Quiz

A quiz will take place in Bolands Bar, Bridge St. Swinford, on Friday, January 26, at 9pm. It's €2 per person on tables of 4. Winning team will get to pick a prize from the mystery box. All welcome.

Living Well Programme 2024

Living Well is a free HSE programme which helps people living with a long-term health condition to manage their condition and improve their overall wellbeing. Anyone with any chronic illness such as diabetes, arthritis, COPD, cardiac illness, anxiety, etc. can benefit from these workshops. The next programme in Westport commences on Friday, February 9. The programme is delivered over six weekly workshops (2.5 hrs x 6) by trained leaders. Advance registration is required. St Brigids Day Tea Room in The Thatch

On Sunday, January 28, Kilmovee Heritage will be hosting a special Imbolc St Brigid’s Day Tea Room in The Thatch from 11am-2pm. There will be plenty of rushes cut for people to make St Brigid's Crosses and Brídeógs throughout, along with tea, coffee, and baked goods for purchase. Kilmovee Heritage look forward to welcoming in Spring with you.

The late Imelda Merriman née Mullen

The death took place of Imelda Merriman, Lisacul on January 8, peacefully at Mayo University Hospital surrounded by her family. Imelda was predeceased by her husband Sean and is sadly missed and remembered by her nephew, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends.

Imelda reposed in The Sharkey Funeral Home, Ballaghaderreen, on Wednesday followed by removal to Christ the King Church, Lisacul. Mass of the Resurrection was held on Thursday at 11am, followed by interment in Lisacul cemetery. May Imelda rest in peace as sympathy is offered to all who are bereaved by her passing.

Gurteen

The late Madeline Walsh nee Gray

The death took place peacefully at her residence on January 8, of Madeline Walsh nee Gray, Carrentemple, Gurteen. A quiet, friendly and much loved member of the community she will be sadly missed. Her remains reposed at her home on Tuesday evening and were removed to St Patrick's Church, Gurteen, on Wednesday for Mass of the Resurrection celebrated by Fr Joe Caulfield assisted by Fr Vincent Sherlock. Burial took place afterwards in Carrentemple Cemetery. Predeceased by her husband Martin, she is survived by her family Carol, Maria, Sheila, Tina,Geraldine and David, her grandchildren, sisters Margaret and Rita, nephews, nieces, extended family, relatives and many friends. May she rest in peace.

The late Michael James Doddy

The funeral of the late Michael James Doddy took place in Gurteen on Wednesday, January 10. Michael, formerly of Ardrahan, Killavil, passed away in London on December 4, and his remains were brought home for burial. Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated in St Patrick's Church, Gurteen, by Fr Joe Caulfield and burial took place afterwards in Mount Irwin Cemetery. Predeceased by his parents Winifred and Michael and brother Dominic, he is survived by his brother Tommy (Cuilmore), sister Kathleen Dart in UK and niece Catherine Thompson, UK, extended family and friends. May he rest in peace.

The late Trevor Clancy

The death took place on January 11 of Trevor Clancy, Castlebaldwin, and Rockcurry, Co. Monaghan. He was the son of Liam and Bridie (nee Coleman) of Doon East, Gurteen, and nephew of Nora Tynan, Doon East. His untimely passing is deeply regretted and sincere sympathy goes out his wife, son, daughter, brother Darren, his parents and to Nora and the Tynan family and to all his many relatives and extended family and many friends. May he rest in peace.

Sympathy 

Sincere sympathy is extended to Sinead O'Hara, Gurteen, on the death of her uncle John Keenan, Ardconnell, Ballymote, and to his wife Margaret, sons and daughters and all the extended family and friends. May John rest in peace; sympathy is also extended to Sinead Flanagan, Killaraght on the death on January 11 of her father Vincent Daly, Ballynew, Castlebar. Sympathy also to Sinead's mother Mary, sister Caitriona, brother Patrick and their families. May he rest in peace.

The late William McDonagh

The death took place on January 4 of William (Liam) McDonagh, formerly of Boyle Road, Gurteen and Clontarf. He was brother of the late Fr Roger and Alfie and Lena. His funeral was in Glasnevin Cemetery on January 8. Predeceased by his wife Bridget, he is survived by his sister-in-law Veronica, son-in-law Peter, nephews, nieces, friends and neighbours to whom sympathy is extended. May he rest in peace.
