Warm tributes to retiring Mayo teacher

The community of Carnacon came together on October 19 last to mark the retirement of Deputy Principal of Burriscarra NS, Marie Hughes. 

Marie has given fantastic service to the community for the 26 years she has taught in Burriscarra NS. 

Fr Michael Farragher celebrated Mass in St Mary’s Church, Carnacon and afterwards there were refreshments and presentations in Carnacon Community Centre. 

The school principal, James Rafter, spoke about the remarkable contribution Marie made to the school over the years. She was commended for her contributions to coaching successful Cuman na mBunscoil Gaelic football teams and for her musical talents in preparing the children for the sacraments of First Holy Communion and Confirmation and preparing the children for Christmas concert performances.

Marie also led many Green Flag initiatives and because of her work the school has six Green Flags for completing projects on a variety of environmental issues. She was a member of the school’s Board of Management for many years where she gave great insight and skill to the oversight of Burriscarra NS.

Marie was also thanked for her work as a classroom teacher. She was an excellent role model for the children she taught in her classroom. She displayed many wonderful qualities: strong work ethic, professionalism, integrity, dependability and collegiality. She made learning enjoyable and interesting and fostered special relationships with the children in her care. 

Finally, Richard Murphy, Chairperson of Burriscarra NS, Board Of Management, thanked Marie for her hard work, loyalty and dedication over the years. 

Presentations were made to Marie by Lorraine Mannion, on behalf of parents past and present, Helena Hastings made a presentation on behalf of the staff and Richard Murphy made a presentation on behalf of the boards of management since Marie commenced duties in the school. 

Marie is wished a long and happy retirement.
