Ballina to stage spectacular concert

Eurovision winner Eimear Quinn is coming to Ballina for a spectacular show.

An exciting concert by candlelight will take place on Friday, November 29, in St Muredach’s Cathedral.

‘Midwinter Melodies’ is set to be a stunning concert of seasonal music by candlelight in the unique, beautiful surroundings of the iconic Ballina cathedral. It will be directed by Regina Deacy.

The host for the evening is former RTÉ newsreader Eileen Dunne and the special guest artist is Eimear Quinn.

Eimear is best known for winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 1996 with the song The Voice. Since then she has toured and performed extensively internationally and has released four albums of her work, the most recent being Ériu, recorded with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and released in 2020.

Eimear has toured in Australia, Europe, America and South Africa in venues including The Royal Albert Hall, The Sydney State Theatre and the Vorst National, Brussels and Theatre De La Ville, Paris. She has also made numerous television appearances as a performer and presenter for Irish television and radio programming for RTÉ and TV3, and many radio and television performances in Europe.

O Holy Night, the album, was inspired by the overwhelming reaction to her performance of O Holy Night live on Ryan Tubridy’s Radio 1 show.

This in turn led to Eimear presenting her own television special, A Christmas Celebration with Eimear Quinn, on RTÉ Television in December 2008. Eimear still tours with these songs nationwide in Ireland every December.

Eimear’s new album, Songs of Winter Dreaming, will be launched at the end of November 2024.

St Muredach’s Cathedral Choir, fresh from their stunning performance of Handel’s Messiah in 2023, will lift the roof with a few Messiah choruses as well as some Christmas pieces in anticipation of the Christmas season.

Add in the velvet tones of tenor Alan McGinty and the sweetness of St Mary’s Secondary School choir and this is a concert not to be missed.

A concert hosted by Eileen Dunne two years ago in St Muredach’s Cathedral sold out quickly, so early booking is advised.

Tickets, priced at €30, are available online at www.ballinaparish.org. Physical tickets on sale at the parish office from 9am to 5pm.

All proceeds go towards the St Muredach's Cathedral Restoration project.
