Knock woman takes over brother's seat

Knock-native Deirdre Lawless succeeds her brother Deputy Paul Lawless following her co-option to Mayo County Council.
Knock woman Deirdre Lawless has been co-opted on to Mayo County Council.
The new Aontu councillor replaces her brother Deputy Paul Lawless.
She was proposed for the position by Fine Gael whip Peter Flynn. However, the councillor expressed concerns about the co-option process and the fact that councillor were expected to “rubberstamp” someone they knew very little about.
“I have no clue about the candidate, but I’m delighted to hear that it’s a female candidate, without a question we need more females in the council not just in Mayo but right across the country, and I’m delighted it appears to be someone that’s young,” said Cllr Flynn.
Cllr Damien Ryan said the co-option process needs to be examined and he hopes to work with his fellow councillors on the issue.
Cllr Lawless was welcomed by her fellow councillors at the special on-line meeting.
“I want to wish Deirdre all the best going forward. It’s a big day for Deirdre and her family. I look forward to working with her in a constructive way for the Claremorris Electoral Area,” said Cllr Michael Burke.
Mayo County Council now has four female councillors. Cllr Lawless was welcomed to the fold by Cllrs Annie May Reape, Donna Sheridan and Alma Gallagher. They pledged to offer her any help or support she requires. “I want to wish Deirdre the best, you have my full support,” said Cllr Gallagher.
Cllr Lawless said she aims to “hit the ground running” in her new role. “I look forward to working with you all positively and collaboratively on Mayo County Council. I am really looking forward to the role. I know it’s challenging and it is hard work,” said Cllr Lawless.
She said she is glad to become another female voice in the council chamber but stressed that the role is about “competency” and not gender.
