Knock Basilica at Knock Shrine.
Knock Shrine will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Basilica of Our Lady, Queen of Ireland on Saturday, 18 July 2026, with a special day of prayer, reflection, storytelling and thanksgiving.
This special milestone marks fifty years since Knock Basilica was opened to accommodate the growing numbers of pilgrims visiting Ireland’s International Eucharistic and Marian Shrine. Over the past five decades, Knock Basilica has welcomed millions of visitors from Ireland and across the world, becoming a place of prayer, healing and spiritual renewal.
Fr. Richard Gibbons said:
"The 50th anniversary of Knock Basilica is an opportunity to celebrate the faith, vision and generosity that made this magnificent place possible. For five decades it has stood as a beacon of hope for pilgrims from every corner of Ireland and far beyond. We look forward to welcoming everyone to Knock as we give thanks for its remarkable legacy and pray for future generations who will continue to find comfort and inspiration here."
The day-long celebration will offer a unique opportunity to explore the history and significance of the Basilica, while giving thanks for its enduring legacy. An exclusive guided tour of the Basilica will take place at 10.00am, 10.30am and 1.00pm, providing insights into the story, architecture and development of this iconic place of worship.
A special commemorative gathering will be held in St. John’s Centre, beginning at 10.30am. Attendees will enjoy a screening of “An Acre of Shelter,” a short film exploring the remarkable story of Knock Basilica, before joining a conversation entitled “Faith and Foundations,” featuring Fr. Richard Gibbons, PP and Rector of Knock Shrine, in discussion with broadcaster Tommy Marren.
The programme will also include an open forum and Q&A session, inviting those in attendance to share memories of the Basilica and reflect on its place in the life of Knock parish and the Church in Ireland over the past fifty years.
