European Parliament candidate Hermann Kelly.
Irish Freedom Party (IFP) candidate for the Midlands North-West European Parliament election Hermann Kelly visited Ballina and Castlebar as part of his campaign canvass.
Mr Kelly, a former journalist who is the leader of the IFP which launched in 2018, told the
that his party believes Ireland should distance itself from EU politics with regards to farming, immigration, free speech and military neutrality. The Derry native said the party advocates for ‘Irexit’, Ireland’s exit from the EU, and it is a long-term party goal.
“We’re better off as a democratic, national, self-governing country where the laws are made for the benefit of our own people.
“On immigration, we can’t house the whole world. We need to have control to decide the number of people who come here and the qualifications they have, that they can contribute to Ireland.
“The direction of the EU brings an ever-closer union and it is time to step off this train.”
He said his party is opposed to Carbon Tax and the Nature Restoration Law.
“We’re opposed to carbon tax, it pushes up the price of our food, milk, petrol, heating oil, we believe it is unnecessary and unjust.”
Mr Kelly said his experience in the European Parliament, where he has worked for the last 15 years for the Eurospectic Europe of Freedom and Direct Democracy party and as an assistant to Romanian MEP Cristian Terheș, would make him a good choice for voters.
“I know how the system works and would be able to deliver for the people of the Midlands North-West. I wouldn’t be learning on the job,” he said.
