High five for Mayo U12s in woeful weather

The Mayo U12s panel who played Roscommon and District last Sunday morning.
Conditions for the Mayo Girls’ under 12s home match on Sunday morning at Solar 21 Park in Milebush were inclement to say the least but despite the weather, both Mayo and their opposition Roscommon and District, put on a wonderful display of football to warm the onlooking spectators. It was Mayo who emerged victorious on home soil with a 5-0 victory.
The first half was a tight affair with solid defending at both ends of the pitch and excellent goalkeeping from Kiltimagh Knock United’s Michaela Kavanagh. After the break, Mayo began to dominate in the attacking half and the deadlock was broken by a fine strike from Lexi Murphy. The Castlebar Celtic player is showing her ability at Inter League level going on in this game to complete her second hat trick in as many games.
The fourth goal came from an Aoife Hoban corner with the Roscommon defender unfortunate with a deflection to make it an own goal. The fifth and final goal came from the speed and finishing of Westport United’s Violet O Malley, who looked a threat from the moment she entered the pitch.
The 5-0 victory reflected the effort and ability of all the players in the squad and their positive start of three wins in three games at this level, certainly bodes well for the future.
Ann Sweeney was the referee and allowed the play to always run smoothly.
The under 14 game between Mayo and Galway was postponed.
