Everest expeditioner to give talk in Mayo
Irish writer and mountaineer Dermot Somers on a trek across Iran.
The Mayo Historical and Archaeological Society will hold its next talk on Wednesday, November 26th, in the ATU Campus, Castlebar at 7.30pm. The title of the talk is 'Adventures Far and Wide: Mountains, Deserts and Nomadic Cultures' and the speaker is Dermot Somers, writer, broadcaster and mountaineer.
Dermot Somers addressed the Mayo Historical and Archaeological Society in 1994, shortly after being a member of the successful Irish Everest Expedition. They have invited him back to talk about his other travels and encounters in remote regions since then. The content of the presentation will include some mountaineering/climbing, and accounts of travelling with nomads in remote parts of the world, such as Arctic Siberia and the mountains of Tibet.
Dermot was born in Roscommon and now lives in Drogheda. He has presented travel and adventure programmes for TG4 and RTÉ, including a series on great nomadic journeys of the world. The series has taken him to Siberia, the Sahara, Iran, and Nepal. His fiction, history, and travel-writing have been published in English and in Irish, winning awards in both languages.
As a climber and mountaineer, he has travelled the world with a particular interest in the Alps and the Himalayas. He was a member of the successful Irish Everest Expedition in 1993.
All are welcome to attend the presentation.
