Councillor wants speed ramps in Ballina

Cllr John O'Hara said ramps are needed at St Patrick's Estate in Ballina to protect children and families from speeding motorists.

A councillor has called for speed ramps to be installed at St Patrick’s Estate and on all pedestrian crossings in Ballina.

Cllr John O’Hara said he has had numerous calls about St Patrick’s Estate from local residents who are concerned about the excessive speed of cars travelling through the estate.

“There are cars and when they go into the estate they are flying around and the area is filled with children,” he told a meeting of Ballina Municipal District. “Every house is a family and they are looking for ramps and they are entitled to have them.”

Cllr O’Hara also asked about the timeframe to have a traffic calming system installed opposite the Sean Duffy Centre in Ardnaree.

“That is an issue I receive calls on every day and it is just a very dangerous spot,” he said, adding that schoolchildren regularly cross there with their parents and many people are left standing and unable to cross for 20 or 30 minutes at peak times.

Independent Cllr Mark Duffy seconded the motion and supported Cllr O’Hara as did Cllr Annie May Reape.

Executive engineer Orla Burke said upgraded pedestrian facilities, including crossing points, are included in the newly-drafted Ballina Transport Plan and a speed survey is being carried out to determine if ramps are required at St Patrick's Estate.
