Complaint over works in Ballina

Works are ongoing on Tolan Street in Ballina.

Residents and members of the business community in Ballina have been "put out" by the recent pavement works on Tolan Street.

Cliona Boland told members of Mayo County Council's Roads Strategic Policy Committee (SPC) that work began on a pedestrian crossing at Hallowe'en but has yet to finish and there has been no consultation with business people or residents. The crossing is expected to be open in January.

Ms Boland said members of the business community in Ballina are frustrated that work has to happen so close to Christmas when Ballina is one of the premier shopping towns of Mayo, adding that this has happened before and asked whether work could be done earlier in the year.

The council's Head of Roads Paul Dolan said that an allocation was given under safety improvements and it is handled by the Ballina Municipal District. He added that it wasn’t good to hear it was going on for so long but said there is a limited number of contractors.

Ballinrobe-based Cllr Damien Ryan said it was great to have a complaint about work going on. Work on roads was being done and while there is a bit of inconvenience, it’s leaving a fantastic footprint.
