Castleconnor Amateur Dramatic Society will perform The Country Boy over three nights this week in Castleconnor Community Centre.

The drama group, which has been in existence for over 35 years, will perform the play written by the renowned Mayo-born playwright John Murphy on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, March 15, 16 and 17. Tickets are €10 and available on the door.

The Country Boy is a humorous and poignant play about emigration in 1950s' Ireland. The play tells the story of the Maher family. As one son returns after 15 years in America, another son is preparing to leave and follow in his brother’s footsteps.

Curly (Jason Earlis) is aged 25 and stuck living at home on the farm with his parents. He yearns to move on, get married to sweetheart Eileen (Louise Cavanagh) and find a life of his own.

However, his father, Tom (Enda Geoghegan) refuses to give his blessing or relinquish his control on the farm despite his mother’s (Susan Mahon) best attempts to plead her son’s case.

Only when Curly's older brother Eddie (Tom Tuffy) comes home from New York with his American wife (Yvonne Egan) are truths revealed of hardship, alcoholism, a troubled marriage, homesickness, and regrets.

The play is directed by Alanna Barrett.

“It’s going to be great. We’ve been rehearsing for the last few weeks and it has been a real treat to work with such a talented group of actors. John Murphy’s play is beautifully written and the story is funny and moving,” Alanna said.

"The actors have really taken on board the challenge of bringing these characters to life and I can’t wait until we bring this play to the stage. Anyone who comes to see this show is in for a great night’s entertainment.”
