Ballina venue selected for exclusive screening

The exclusive screening marks Ballina Arts Centre’s second year of collaboration with the Japanese Film Festival.

Ballina Arts Centre is one of a handful of rural venues chosen to screen films as part of this year’s National Japanese Film Festival.

On Thursday April 23rd, they will show Katsuhiro Otomo’s cyberpunk classic, Akira (アキラ). This landmark in anime and grown-up animation has lost none of its power and spectacle in the nearly 40 years since its release.

The exclusive screening marks Ballina Arts Centre’s second year of collaboration with the Japanese Film Festival, and they are delighted to be teaming up with Access Cinema Ireland to ensure Akira makes a welcome return to the big screen.

In a dystopian neo-Tokyo, Kaneda and Tetsuo are members of a vigilante biker gang. When their best friend Tetsuo is captured by the authorities after an accident, they discover he has powerful telekinetic abilities. As Tetsuo struggles with his newfound capabilities, he uncovers the dark secrets of Akira - the subject of previous catastrophic experiments by the government. As Tetsuo’s powers spiral out of control, Kaneda must save his best friend to prevent a new cataclysm. Don’t miss this chance to experience this acclaimed piece of Japanese cinema, and audience favourite, on the big screen.

This presentation is part of Ballina Arts Centre’s new Cine Club Programme, which screens a new film every month.
