The Connacht Fleadh Cheoil took place in Ballinasloe at the weekend where there was a remarkable achievement by a trio of members of Admiral Brown CCÉ. Sisters Croídhe and Niamh Doherty won the 12-15 years and 15-18 years Sean-Nós dancing competitions while Peter Fox won the senior competition, in a clean sweep by the Foxford branch. All three go forward to represent Mayo and Connacht at the All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil in Wexford next month.
There was double the celebration for Croídhe Doherty as she also won the 12-15 melodeon competition.
Another Admiral Brown member, Michael McHale, was also in tremendous form in Ballinasloe and booked his ticket to Wexford with successes in several competitions. He won both the flute slow airs and tin whistle slow airs at under-12 level, and was also placed second in the flute to qualify in all three competitions.
Another young man who is bound for the Model County is Sean Holmes who won the 12-15 mouth organ.
Further results were unavailable at the time of going to print but will hopefully appear in next week’s edition. Congratulations to all.
As part of Moy Davitts GAA’s ‘Green Clubs’ initiative, two new Re-turn bottle bins have been installed at the club grounds. All players, parents and supporters are asked to put their empty plastic bottles and cans into these bins in order to reduce the amount of plastic waste in the grounds. All funds raised from the return of these bottles to McGloin's Gala in Foxford will be reinvested in the club’s teams and facilities. Club members can also return their bottles directly to McGloin's Gala and donate their receipt to the Moy Davitts account. The club is appreciate of the ongoing support of the local community.
The Foxford Enhancement Group are in the process of purchasing new international flags to revitalise the display that always catches the eye outside the old boys national school in the heart of the town. With some of the flags having become slightly tattered due to the elements and repeated washing, it has been decided to replace them and with that in mind, the Foxford Enhancement Group is wishing to hear from anyone new who may have come to live in the locality and whose flag is yet to be included in the display, so that all nationalities living in Foxford can be represented and feel included.
You may contact the group via their Facebook page.
There were mixed fortunes for anglers on the week ending Sunday, June 29 with some doing very well and others not so much, on the waters of Foxford Salmon Anglers. Fish had started to appear more in the lower beats and deep water while the fishing on the Moy was better up stream, at the high bank and Carrigeen. That trend reversed as the week went on in Rinnaney and plenty of fish began to show as they dodged the bubble and fly, prawn and worm. 28 salmon were reported caught.
The outlook was promising given the rainfall that came in this past week.
