Over 130 students from Our Ladies Secondary School started their school day recently with a 4km walk with their teachers in support of the fundraiser ‘3000k for Curly Sue’. As many people are aware, Shelley (Lauren’s mum) and the team at Cois Cuain are completing the challenge of clocking up 3000km and a Croagh Patrick climb in the month of February in memory of past pupil Lauren Padden and to raise money for Sunflower’s Children’s Hospice.
The school raised €300 for the worthy cause, a huge thank you to the students for their donations and participation with special thanks to the staff who accompanied them and had tea ready for them on their return to school.
Shelley and the team at Cois Cuain Restaurant & Take Away Belmullet are wished well with their fundraiser. If you wish to donate, the link is https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1B96XnRrYd/?mibextid=wwXIfr.
There was another big turnout for a great day of darts for the Tom Rafter Memorial in Healy’s Glenamoy. A youth’s event was added this year with 22 players taking part. Mikey Monaghan hunting for his 5th youth’s title was denied in a brilliant final by Ben Wilson. Well done, Ben, on becoming the inaugural youth champion. Semi-finalists were Daniel Irwin and Stephen Healy with Alex Bielinski beating Paul Neary Jnr in the shield final.
The main event saw 64 players took to the ochies to contest the 2026 title. A great afternoon and early evening of darts provided some great battles with the semi-finals throwing up the clashes of Mikey Monaghan v Shane McHale and Alex Bielinski v James King. As is getting more and more regular these days, the youth overcame the experience with Alex and Mikey reaching the final after two cracking semi-finals. The final was a tight affair with the early legs shared, but Alex powered on to get over the line to win. The highest checkout with 135 was Pat Deane.
Well done to all players and, as usual, to Bernie and Mícheál and and staff in Healy’s for hosting another great day of darts. €1140 was raised for Cara Iorrais on the night with some of the ladies from Cara Iorrais on hand selling tickets and doing the draw.
The semi-finals of the Erris Village League were played out in a packed Una's bar in Blacksod. In the plate semi-finals, the youthful team of Elly 2 was too strong for Binghamstown 2, and in the other semi, the experienced Healy’s team got the better off Elly 3 to reach the plate final.
The shield semi-finals saw both newcomers to the village league this year in Doocey’s and Connolly’s progressing to the shield final beating Corclough 2 and Binghamstown 1 respectively.
The overall cup semi-finals were enthralling with the match between Glencastle and the previously unbeaten Munnellys being played on Friday night in Corclough due to players being unavailable the Saturday night. There was a cracking two doubles matches, with both going the way of Glencastle with Kevin Kilcoyne adding the first singles match to put Glencastle 3nil up and leave Munnellys Pat Deane with it all to do to save the match against Tom Moran. Pat took the first leg in 17 darts with a tidy 70 checkout. Tom hit back with a 15 darter finishing 120. Tom took the last leg of what was one of the games of the year in 16 darts and, in turn, sent Glencastle into the final.
The other semi-final between back-to-back reigning and defending champions Elly 1 and the unbeaten and highly fancied Valley Inn 1 teams served up as the main event Saturday night in Una's and it didn't disappoint. The doubles matches were shared as were the first 2 singles games leaving the score at 2 all when Brendan Conway narrowly got the better of Fred Monaghan to put the Valley Inn 3-2 up. Aiden Maloney and Martin Keane in the anchor roles for both teams played out an enthralling battle, sharing the first two legs to send the match all the way to the last leg. A massive 171 from Aiden in the middle of the deciding leg gave him a good lead and he went on to pin the double to send Valley Inn into their second final in two years and end the reign of the defending champions Elly 1.
The chairman and committee were delighted to present a cheque from the proceeds of the recent Christmas Lights Parade fundraiser to Seán Carey and Liam Noone of Corclough Community Centre. A special thank you to chairman Ciarán Brett who made the presentation with several of the committee members also in attendance on the night. The committee sincerely appreciate the continued support from everyone who took part, organised, donated and helped make the event such a wonderful success for our community.
Well done to everyone who took part in the annual school quiz. The standard was excellent and it was great to see such strong competition on the day.
