Connacht U18 Shield round two

The Ballinrobe Town U18 boys’ team recorded a superb 5-0 victory against Salthill Devon at The Green, on Saturday, March 2, and now progress to round three of the provincial shield competition. Ballinrobe led 3-0 at the break with the goals arriving from Henry Hughes and Domhnall Ryan (2).

Salthill tried to get back into the game during the second half, however, Ballinrobe finished the joust strongly and further goals from Kyle Burke and Ben Place, helped round off what was an impressive display by the hosts.

Ballinrobe Rugby Club

The Ballinrobe Rugby Club women’s team suffered a gut-wrenching 20-19 defeat at home to OLBC/Corinthians on Sunday week last, in what was a highly competitive Connacht Senior Plate semi-final. There was a large attendance at the Ballinrobe Racecourse venue for this clash and the hosts made a superb start with Amy Horan claiming a well-earned try. OLBC/Corinthians responded impressively though and before the break the visitors had restored parity, and the sides were level at 5-5 during the half-time team talks. The opening exchanges of the new half were keenly contested, but Ballinrobe’s Amy Horan once again found that vital pocket of space and managed to pinch a morale boosting five-pointer. Ailise Burke was coolness personified with the conversion and Ballinrobe led by seven points, much to the delight of the home supporters.

Undeterred, OLBC/Corinthians regrouped, and the Galway visitors managed to conjure up a touchdown to leave the game in the melting pot.

Ballinrobe’s Faith Durkin was in inspirational form and she brilliantly teed-up team captain Rachel Kinneavy, with the latter skipping past several defenders before gleefully crossing the try line. Burke once again slotted over the conversion, and this helped muster a nine-point lead for the Black and White. However, a doughty OLBC/Corinthians refused to throw in the towel and a grandstand finish was in store when the Galway city side plundered a touchdown, thus reducing the deficit to just four points (19-15).

As the game entered its final moments, a lucky break was seized upon by OLBC and they managed to pinch a late try to nudge ahead by a single point with full-time on the horizon. Soon after, the full-time whistle sounded and whilst Ballinrobe were crestfallen, they can certainly be proud of their efforts during what was an enthralling contest. OLBC/Corinthians will now meet University of Galway in the Senior Plate final at Creggs Rugby Club, on Sunday, March 16.
