Ceol an Gheimhridh

There's a great event happening in Swinford this weekend. Michael Davitt CCE Swinford is once again hosting the Mayo finals of Ceol an Gheimhridh (The Winter Fleadh) in Swinford National School on Saturday, November 23. The competitions (confined this year to U11s and U14s) have been entered by over 150 children from all over Mayo and it is hoped that people will come out to support all the wonderful young musicians, singers, dancers and those telling stories or reciting poems. Everyone is welcome to attend the competitions. €5 admission fee covers all competitions/venues for the day. Competitions begin at 10am.

A great weekend of sessions for all age groups has been planned starting with a Seisiún na nÓg in The White House on Friday evening from 6.30pm followed by the official opening there at 8pm. A lovely Cupán agus Comhra event will take place from 3pm on Saturday afternoon in Padraig Horkan's. There will be go leor caint, amhranaíocht agus ceol...not to mention Hillary’s famous ham sandwiches and O'Hara's buns. The session in Boland's on Saturday evening begins at 7pm and the organisers are hoping to have a great blast of music there as usual. The usual Sunday session with Rob and friends will be happening in Padraig Horkan's of course and that is always a mighty session.

Branch Youth Officer and assistant youth officers Seán, Ríona and Martin along with all the committee here in Swinford are working hard to make Ceol an Gheimhridh a resounding success. Also, a shout out to all the senior musicians who help out in all the branch activities and in particular those who come along to support and encourage the young people. Michael Davitt CCE are very grateful for the generosity and support of the principal, Mr Adrian Cregg, and all the staff of Scoil Muire agus Treasa. Durkan Bohola Community Park announces partnership with Mayo LGFA

Durkan Bohola Community Park is thrilled to confirm a new license agreement with Mayo LGFA, marking an exciting step forward for ladies' football in Mayo. With player numbers growing each year, the sport continues to thrive across the county, evident in the Mayo U16 team reaching the All-Ireland final in 2024, and the U14s capturing the All-Ireland title in 2023.

This partnership provides a valuable, centrally located training facility for Mayo LGFA teams. Given the size of the county, many players have faced lengthy journeys for training sessions. Access to a dedicated field in Bohola will not only help to reduce travel times but will also support the development and competitiveness of ladies' football at all age levels in Mayo.

This strong partnership between Mayo LGFA and Durkan Bohola Community Park promises mutual benefits, fostering growth and camaraderie in the sport. Both groups eagerly anticipate the positive impact this collaboration will have in the years ahead. With funding of €445,000 secured from Community Sports Facilities Funding, they hope to see the development progress rapidly in 2025.

Durkan Bohola Community Park and Mayo LGFA thank Bill Durkan for his continued support towards the project.
