Bangor Hib’s good league showing

On behalf of everyone at Bangor Hibs FC they thank everyone that attended and supported the club over the course of the league season. Bangor Hibs welcomed Partry Athletic to Ballybeg for the final game of the season.

The game started off a bit cagey but after 15 minutes the midfield started to get a hold of the game and they started to play football. Continuing on from the last game, they started to pass the ball more quickly (you'd probably say James Heffernan was like a young Franco Baresi at centre half, some might say slightly better looking and can do hair cuts. them win a free kick on the edge of their box, converted by David who calmly played the ball underneath the wall, deceiving the Partry keeper.

Partry equalised against the run of play meaning they went in at 1-1 at half time.

The second half saw Hibs continue with some great passages of play, with James Armstrong in particular giving the Partry right back a really difficult game and Kyle, Josh Reilly and Finnian not giving Partry any time on the ball.

On 60 minutes Bangor Hibs made 3 changes to turn the pressure into the win the lads deserved. This duly arrived with a Wimbledon-esque tactical switch that saw Ryan Connolly send the ball up to Brian McHale who calmly dispatched the ball into the bottom corner to continue his goal a game record for the season and register Ryan's first assist. Hibs saw the game out easily to seal 5th place in the Division and cap a fine season back in Division One.

Thanks again to everyone that’s helped out this season with Hibs. From sponsors to everyone coming down and cheering on the lads.

Mixie's Bog

On Mayo Day this year, one of the most popular attractions in Áras Inis Gluaire, Belmullet, was the first screening of a new, locally-produced documentary about turf-cutting in Erris, called Mixie's Bog. This is a film about the dying art of turf-cutting by hand, as carried out in the Erris area for many generations. It was filmed and produced by local filmmaker Aiden Barrett, and features his brother Mixie describing and displaying all the arcane skills and traditions of turf-cutting by hand, all the while talking about the art of turf-cutting, the changes he's seen, and life in general. The background music, including an original song, The Turfman, is supplied by local musicians Des and Seán Harrington, from the band Trad Lib.

Áras Inis Gluaire are happy to announce that, following many inquiries from people who missed out last time, Mixie's Bog will be screened again in the Áras on Tuesday 12th August, starting at 7.30 pm. The screening will be followed by a Q and A session with Mixie, Aiden and Seán, and refreshments will be provided in the lobby afterwards. There will be a nominal entrance fee of €10, with all proceeds going to Mayo/Roscommon Hospice.

Come along for an evening of nostalgia and chat, as Mixie takes us through the intricacies of a tradition that will not be with us for much longer.
