Local Notes: Special classroom opened at Ballinrobe Community School

Mayo County Library Service announced a unique, free genealogy event on Saturday, November 23, at Castlebar Library. In partnership with the North Mayo Heritage Centre and the South Mayo Family Research Centre, the library will host free genealogy consultations between 10am and 4pm. Ger Delaney and Brendan Walsh, family history researchers at the two Co. Mayo centres, will be in attendance to help you on a one-to-one basis to get started with your family history research, or to assist with any questions you may have about your own research. The North Mayo Heritage Centre and the South Mayo Family Research Centre are the two Irish Family History Foundation accredited research centres in Co. Mayo. Together they bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to this free event.

Ballinrobe GAA and LGFA Club wishes to acknowledge the outstanding contribution of Peter Ford who has stepped down as manager of the club's intermediate team after a three-year period.
Peter guided the team to the 2023 Mayo Intermediate Football Championship decider and also reached quarter-final and semi-final stages during his three-year term. In 2023 the team also won the Michael Walsh Cup title. A former distinguished wearer of the club jersey, Peter assembled an excellent backroom team that included John Gilrane, Colm Jennings, Billy Burke, Davy Walsh, David McDonnell, Evan Gannon and Emma Jennings.
All involved in the club wish Peter and his backroom colleagues every success in the future and know that they will continue to keep Ballinrobe GAA club very much in their hearts.
Well done to Ballinrobe GAA Club member Tom Carney on being named as manager of the Mayo LGFA U14 ladies team. Tom Carney has been a Ballinrobe club underage coach and manager for many years, and is also on the club executive, and was vice-chairperson of South Mayo GAA.
Ballinrobe GAA and LGFA Club wish Tom all the best and know that he is bringing a lot of knowledge to his new position.
Ballinrobe GAA Club will hold its AGM in the Carra Bar, at Ballinrobe Racecourse, on Friday, November 29, at 8pm.
Ballinrobe GAA and LGFA Club will hold their annual dinner dance next Saturday, November 23, at 7pm in The Castlecourt Hotel, Westport. Music will be provided on the night by the ‘Weightless Astronauts’. There was no winner of the €25,000 lotto jackpot draw which was held in Fitzpatrick’s Bar, on Monday, November 11. The numbers drawn were 9, 16, 22 and 27. The €25 winners were Cian Ryan, and Anna Burke.
Rose McHale was the winner of €95 in last week’s 50/50 draw conducted by the Tacú Family Resource Centre.
Ballinrobe Community School recently opened its new Special Education Class situated in Room 25. This is another significant step in the South Mayo schools commitment to providing inclusive education and supporting diversity for all of its students. The school paid tribute to all in the SEN Department and its SNA’s for their hard work and for making the official launch for the event such a wonderful and memorable occasion. The school extend a big thank you to Ava and Sean for cutting the ribbon to mark the official opening of Room 25.

There was no winner of the €7,500 lotto jackpot draw which was held in Mellotte’s Bar, The Neale, on Tuesday, November 12. The numbers drawn were 10, 18, 22 and 24. The €30 winners were Seamus Walsh and PJ Fahy. The €25 winners were Eileen Byrne, and Hilda Glynn.
The Cong National School Parents Association will hold their next meeting on Tuesday (tonight), November 19, at 7.30pm in Cong National School. This is a great opportunity to get involved, share your ideas, and help make a difference in the school community. All are welcome.
Mary Langan was the lucky winner of €500 in the weekly 50/50 draw conducted by Ballinrobe Rugby Club. The aforementioned draw was held in Fitzpatrick’s Bar, on Sunday week last. The Ballinrobe junior team were in Connacht Junior One (B) League action on Sunday November 10, when they faced Ballinasloe in a rescheduled game at The Green. Ballinasloe showed no ill effects of their long trip to South Mayo and the East Galway men led at the break on a score-line of 10-3.
At one stage during the second half the visitors held a commanding 18-9 lead, but a resurgent Ballinrobe regrouped and in the end the hosts recorded a terrific 23-18 victory. The victory moved Ballinrobe up to second place in the One (B) League table on 12 points, and just three points behind table toppers Ballinasloe.
The Robesiders next league outing will take place on Sunday, November 24, when they host Sligo Second XV at The Green. This tie is scheduled to kick-off at 2.30pm and your support would be appreciated. Meanwhile, the Ballinrobe Second XV team played their opening fixture of the Junior 2 (B) season on Saturday, November 9, away to Dunmore Second XV, where the North Galway men recorded a 43-31 victory.
The results of a Ladies nine-hole golf competition held on Friday, November 8, are as follows: 1st, Breege Jennings (18), 2nd, Peggy Butler (14).

Islandeady Foroige Club meet every Friday night in the community centre at 8.30pm. Club members are busy planning many events in the coming year and they look forward to the weekly catch-up and chill time with their friends after a busy school week.
