Pat was pleasantly surprised at his birthday celebrations where he was joined by the old and new crew. They have also shared some of Pats words on the night. Pat Walker, in his own words.
‘When I walked in the door of the Western Strands Hotel, I was shocked and pleasantly surprised. A room full of good vibrations of family, friends and colleagues, a history of my life acquaintances. We had a great night thanks to Lilly, Lorraine and PJ who organised it. The hotel for the fine food served, Angela Geraghty for the amazing cake that captured the boat we have fished in for years. The people who came and gave presents and cards on the occasion.
The sea has been a big role in my life since the first day in 1969 when I left the shore as a fisherman with my father and brothers in Blacksod Bay. For over 20 years I was part of the crew of the Ballyglass Lifeboat.
My thoughts on opening the cards and seeing the money given to me, I felt the fitting thing to do was to put a portion of the money to a charity close to my heart and put the remainder towards the food. Everyone got enjoyment and contributed to a worldly cause. I also feel very fortunate to be here after all the dangerouss situations I found myself in. A life as a fisherman is often regarded as one of the most dangerous jobs in the world.
I often put it down to the mutual respect that evolved over the years of sailing the Atlantic Ocean between man and sea. The power of nature and the fury of the sea can be unforgiving and rarely gives a second chance.
At my age today and everyday are good days. The birthday surprise party was a day and night to remember for all the right reasons. ‘’ Pat and his family have expressed their thanks to everybody for their kindness to Pat.
