Local notes: School to host Careers Fair
Descendants of Limerick man Professor William O'Shaughnessy were in Foxford last week to view the plaque on the former Music School that commemorates the pageant which was staged in 1942 to mark the golden jubilee of the local Woollen Mills. Professor O'Shaughnessy composed the music for the elaborate production.
An open invitation has been extended by St Joseph’s Secondary School to their Careers Fair that will take place at Foxford Sports and Leisure Centre on January 27 from 5.30pm to 8pm.

Moy Davitts senior footballers Cian McHale and Conor Reid were both in action in last week’s opening round of the Sigerson Cup – the Third Level football championship. Cian impressed with his four points, including three from play, for UL in their 0-17 to 1-09 win against MTU Cork, just days after he also helped Mayo get their FBD League campaign off to a winning start with two points when introduced off the bench against Sligo.
Conor Reid is featuring for ATU Galway but their Sigerson Cup journey got off to a difficult start as they were beaten 3-12 to 0-10 by UCD.
Cian’s UL side is away to DCU in Round 2 tonight (Tuesday) while Conor and his ATU Galway teammates travel to St Mary’s University.

The funeral took place in Foxford last Sunday of Margaret Maloney, Stonehall, following her peaceful passing in the gentle care of the staff at Blackrocks Nursing Home, Foxford where she was surrounded by her loving family.
Margaret, who was in her 92nd year, was predeceased by her husband John, son-in-law Philip, daughter-in-law Lita and deceased members of the McTigue and Maloney families.
She will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by her daughters Louise, Anne-Marie, Elizabeth and Rosarii, sons James, John, Enda and Hugh, son-in-law Declan, daughter’s-in-law Marie, Yvonne and Emer, grandchildren, great grandson, nieces, nephews, neighbours and her circle of dear friends.
Margaret lay in repose in Clarke’s Funeral Home, Foxford last Saturday afternoon and following the celebration of her funeral Mass at St Michael’s Church on Sunday, her burial took place in Craggagh Cemetery.
May she rest in peace.
Sympathy is extended to the family of John Murphy, Assumpta Place, Foxford who passed unexpectedly but peacefully last week at Mayo University Hospital.
John was predeceased by his parents William and Ellen and also by his brothers Des and Gabriel and his sister Maureen. He will be dearly and lovingly missed by his brothers Terence, Oliver and Gerard and his sisters Helena and Christina, his sisters in-law Bridie, Roisin and Bridget his nephews and nieces and by his dear friend Ann O’Malley, extended family, neighbours and friends.
John’s funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday afternoon last, January 9, at St Michael’s Church, Foxford will burial afterwards in Toomore Cemetery.

The death occurred last week of Richard George Binley, Clossaghroe, and formerly of Massbrook Kennels, Cashel, Foxford. Richard passed at the residence of his son Jon and daughter in-law Allison.
Predeceased by his parents Harold and Gladice, Richard will be dearly and lovingly missed by his wife Sheila, sons Gary and Jon, daughter in-law Allison and Gary’s partner Maeve, his grandchildren Saoirse, Jake, Ryan, Fern, Rhys, Tegan and great-grandson Gerard, extended family, neighbours and friends.
Richard reposed at Clarke’s Funeral Home, Foxford last Friday evening and on Saturday his Service of Committal took place at Shannon Crematorium.
May he rest in peace.
Sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Thomas Gallagher, Castlebar and formerly of Straide, who passed suddenly at Mayo University Hospital last week, surrounded by his loving family.
Thomas will be dearly missed by his beloved partner Linda, his sons Michael, Thomas and Stephen and their mother Theresa. A cherished grandfather of Alexander, Adam and Owen, Thomas will also be sadly missed by his brother John, sisters Mary, Bridget, Katherine and Patricia, his daughters-in-law Sylvia, Izabela and Liz, his nieces, nephews, extended family, neighbours and friends.
Thomas was predeceased by his brothers James and Edward.
Thomas lay in response at the residence of his sister Bridget in Knockshanvalley, Straide last Thursday and his funeral Mass was celebrated at The Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar on Friday morning. Thomas was buried afterwards in Straide Old Cemetery.

The funeral was held in St Michael’s Church, Foxford last Thursday of Peter McGowan, Slieve na Greine, formerly of Ballina Road and Birmingham, England. Peter passed peacefully in the care of the staff of the Blackrocks Nursing Home, who looked after Peter so well in his final days.
Peter was predeceased by his father Tom McGowan, his mother Bridget (née Cosgrove), his wife Kathleen McGowan and his siblings Mary, Seamus, Angela, Billy and Tommy. He will be dearly and forever missed by his children Louise, Gemma, James and his grandchildren, his niece Kathryn McGowan and her family William Noone, Aoife, Oisín and Síofra, all his nephews and nieces and extended family, a wide circle of friends in Ireland and abroad and all the wonderfully kind neighbours in Slieve na Greine and all the staff at Blackrocks Nursing Home.
Peter lay in repose at Clarke’s Funeral Home last Wednesday evening and following his funeral Mass on Thursday, his burial took place in Craggagh Cemetery.

A retired Quarter Master Sergeant in the 18th Infantry Battalion, Peter was predeceased by his parents Tom and Kathleen and infant twins Mary and Pauline.
He will be dearly and forever missed by his family Peter, Fergal, Martina and Aisling and their mother Concepta, his grandchildren Rebecca, Conor, Ruairi, Frances, Marron, Daragh, Eleanor and Saoirse, his brothers Tom, John and James and his sister Marcella, relatives, neighbours and many friends.
Peter lay in repose at Clarke’s Funeral Home on Monday, January 5 and his funeral Mass was celebrated in St Michael’s Church, Foxford last Tuesday with burial afterwards in Craggagh Cemetery.
