Local Notes: RHS Home Care host long service recognition awards in Belmullet.

Con Moynihan Chairman of the Board of Management RHS Home Care with recipients of long-service recognition awards at a presentation in the Broadhaven Bay Hotel recently with RHS and H.S.E. representatives.
Recently RHS Home Care had the honour of hosting a heart-warming event in Belmullet, celebrating two significant milestones. Firstly they recognised the incredible dedication and service of their long-serving carers in the North Mayo region. Their unwavering commitment and hard work have profoundly impacted the community, providing essential care and support to those in need.
Secondly, they marked the well-deserved retirement of area supervisor, Ann Padden. For the past two decades, Ann has been an invaluable member of the team, serving as an area supervisor across Erris. Her dedication, compassion, and tireless efforts have left a positive mark on the services has have provided across Anne’s area.
Ann’s commitment to the cooperative and her area has been unwavering. She has supported countless families, carers, clients, and the HSE, ensuring that the services reach those who need them most. Her leadership, kindness, and expertise have made a significant difference in the lives of many.
Thank you, Ann, for your incredible service and the positive impact you've made over the years. You will be greatly missed.
Here’s to celebrating the amazing carers and wishing Ann a wonderful retirement filled with joy and relaxation.
Long service awards went to Ann Padden (20 years), Lily Ruane (20 years), Evelyn Harraghty (20 years), Ann Garvin (19 years), Kathleen Ruddy (19 years), Shirley Vagg (16 years), Mary McAndrew (16 years), Mary Martina Naughton (15 years), and Gerry Sheeran (15 years).
Congratulations and happy retirement to Ann Padden who has called time on 30 years’ service working as Area Supervisor with RHS Home Care. Her colleagues held a function in the Western Strands Hotel in Belmullet on Saturday evening, July 27, to mark the occasion.
Ann is working with RHS since 2004, initially as a carer and later as a supervisor and Ann greatly enjoyed meeting service users and carers throughout the many years of working in the service. Many changes have been experienced over the years, as the service developed into the professional support company it is today. Ann enjoyed supporting all the care workers she managed. Problem solving, being a listening ear to those who needed it and gaining knowledge and understanding as she went along. Bringing RHS to being a very successful care agency was hard work but worth it to hear that those who gained support to stay in their own home with daily visits made the hard work so worthwhile. The community is so important to people and working in RHS showed this so clearly.
On August 11 next, in conjunction with Belmullet Festival Bingo in the Broadhaven Bay Hotel at 7pm, there is a tea and nibbles fundraiser for Mayo Roscommon Hospice in memory of Kevin Gannon. Lots of you will remember Kevin from his time on the road as a meter reader. He travelled the whole of Erris, in the early days on a Honda 50. Many of the houses he stopped at, he had a cuppa tea in. He did messages for people, brought stuff from shops in Belmullet and returned unwanted items the next day. He filled forms for people, he chatted and spent time with people, lots of whom lived alone without company. He also was a Bingo caller for almost 50 years. He fought hard to keep Belmullet GAA Bingo going, sadly this died away very shortly after his passing. Kevin passed away in October 2022 in the loving care of Mayo Hospice. The care and respect he received was excellent. If you are around Belmullet on the night please pop in for ‘A Cuppa For Kev’, share any stories you may remember and help celebrate a man who very quietly did lots to help others.
Tullaghan Bay Rowing Club annual regatta, Cruinniú na mBád, will take place on Friday, August 16. A park and ride service will be available from the church in Doohoma. There will be music, refreshments, children's entertainment, live commentary of the races, and much more. Come along and experience a day like no other.
In the evening, a presentation event will be held at Trá Buí Doohoma at 9pm. Laura and Alannah will provide music, ensuring the fun-filled day extends into the early hours with ceoil, damhsa agus craic.
Congratulations to Donal and Dinny Murphy and Tiernan Gaughan winners in the mixed youth race recently at the Inisturk Regatta. Donal has had many wins before and he has done a lot of rowing and coaching with the youth of this club. It is very special to see him win a race with his young son and it is likely the first of many. Congratulations to Tiernan Gaughan on the double winning with Darren O’Toole, Inishturk and Pat Sweeney in the six oars. Donal and Tiernan also came second in the four oars.

Well done to all the players who took part in our U8s and U10s games recently in Cill Chomáin. Almost 100 players from Erris St Pats and Cill Chomáin took part in the games on what turned out to be a beautiful sunny evening. There was some excellent football skills on show from the players and some great scores from all teams. Thank you to the four referees; Gavin, Katelyn, Niamh and Kyle for doing a great job, to all the parents and coaches who supported and encouraged the kids during the games, and special thanks to the scheme workers for having the pitches marked out and in excellent condition and to the volunteers who served up the treats at the end.

Meanwhile on the field of play, Erris Utd U12s got a good 7-2 win away to Conn Rangers (A), recently to make a solid start to the season with 3 wins from their first 3 games. Conn Rangers started well playing good football but good Erris pressure after 10 minutes forced a turnover and a good cross by Jimmy Coyle set up Róisin Lavelle to finish well to put Erris 1-0 up, another 2 goals in the next 5 minutes by Oscar Barrett and Jimmy Coyle put Erris in a strong position with Erris making plenty of changes from the bench. Further goals from Oscar Barrett and Stephen Healy put Erris 5-0 up at the break. Erris made more changes at the break and Conn Rangers took advantage of a slow Erris start with 2 quick fire well taken goals. Erris realised they had to raise the tempo and good play and finishes from Conan Cosgrave and Harry Healy rounded off a solid night with all 20 kids playing their part in a good win.
