News of the passing of Val Hughes, Rehins, Ballina, was met with a great sense of sadness and loss in the community. Val passed away on Sunday, May 19, following a short illness. His remains was removed from his residence on the Wednesday morning to St Teresa Church, Rathduff, for his 12 noon Requiem Mass. There large numbers gathered to pay their final respects to a much loved neighbour and friend. During the homily Val was remembered as a man of great faith with special devotion to Mary travelling with his wife Monica to many of the Marian shrines abroad. He was remembered also as a great father, grandfather, brother, kind neighbour and friend who was always so helpful when the need arose.
In the eulogy at the end of Mass his friend Eddie McHale, his former Knockmore team mate, recalled his many memories of Val on the football pitch and as a member of the very successful Knockmore team back in the 60’s and 70’s while noting that three of Val’s former team mates were present to concelebrate his Mass today. Val was a member of a sporting family of five boys and grew up in his native parish of Knockmore. He was involved with the oil business for many years and many recalled his helpful manner during his many delivery days.
He met and married his beloved late wife Monica (nee Culkin) and they had a family of three, two boys and one girl. A family that will now miss him so very much together with his beloved grandchildren. As a final mark of respect former and present members of Knockmore GAA Club formed a Guard of Honour as he began his final journey to his resting place in Ballinahaglish Cemetery.
Pre deceased by his parents and brothers Peter, Michael and Gerard, he is survived by his sons Gerome and Eugene, his daughter Loretta, grandchildren, his brother Christy, nephews, nieces, in-laws, neighbours and friends to whom deepest sympathy is extended. May he now rest in peace.

Ardmoy U14 and U18 football teams pulled off a magnificent double in the county underage league series last Tuesday evening when both sides had deserved and very creditable victories in their respective league finals. Ardmoy U14 team had a very comprehensive 4-8 to 1-11 triumph over a strong and very fancied Ballinrobe squad in Foxford while Ardmoy U18's enjoyed a 2-10 to 0-9 win over a strong Westport B side at Lahardane.
At the time of writing Ardmoy U16 players are hoping to make it a historic treble when opposing Charlestown in the county league decider at Bonniconlon on Thursday evening. Whatever the outcome the team and management can feel justifiably proud of reaching a county final. Qualifying for three Mayo county league finals reflects an indisputable level of self-belief, dedication and hard graft by all involved.
Young players in these age groups just want to play football but the secret to their success lies in the vision, commitment and selfless dedication of a group of well-focussed and passionate managers and coaches who do the heavy lifting in the background week in week out in all types of weather conditions.
Why? Simply because they love doing it. Hats off to all involved with these young Ardmoy teams and we wish them continued success.
