The talented athletes from Tourmakeady and Partry Community Games had a fantastic day of top performances, PB's, medals, podium finishes and superb fun at the recent Mayo Community Games Track and Field Finals in Claremorris.
Paddy McGeough kicked off the medals glory for Partry Tourmakeady, winning 3rd place in the Boys Shot Putt. Éabha Barker quickly followed suit, by also coming 3rd in the Shot Putt competition for girls, to win a second bronze medal for the club. Up next was Seamus Burke for the U16 boys 1500m race. Seamus seemed to glide around the track with ease to win the race and the first gold medal for Partry Tourmakeady. Winning 1st place booked Seamus straight through to the nationals finals in Carlow on August 24. Then it was Sophie Flavin's turn to run the U16 girls 200m race. Sophie led from the start, with an excellent sprint to the finish line in 1st place. Sophie's win gave Partry/Tourmakeady club the 2nd gold of the day and also puts her straight through to the national finals in Carlow.
The club also had great performances from Rian Barker, James Conway, Millie Prendergast, Celine Lydon, CJ Walsh, Conor Walsh, Peter Sheridan, Robert Dermody, Holly Dermody and Katie Sheridan, many of whom were placed in their heats but just missed out in the finals, and others recording personal bests. Congratulations to you all. There were more medals in store. Réaltín Donoghue (who ran the U10 girls 100m race) and Sophie Lydon (who ran the U8 girls 60m race) both took home silver medals. Winning 2nd place in their races means they are through to the regional finals in Athlone on August 10, where they will represent their club and county. Éabha Barker made a second appearance on the podium, winning 3rd place in the U14 girls 100m race and she will be joining Réaltín and Sophie at the regional finals in Athlone, competing for a spot in the national finals in Carlow.
It was a massive 7 medals in total from the fantastic team of young athletes at the Mayo finals. What a result for the community and club in their second year up and running. Congratulations and many thanks to each competitor for your performances and support of your teammates. You were a credit to your community. And you all looked great in the new singlets, sponsored by FP&A Senior Finance.
A special mention goes to Sophie Flavin for reciting the pledge through Irish again this year at the opening ceremony. Finally thanks to the parents for bringing you and to Jennifer Sheridan and her team of local volunteers who put a lot of work in behind the scenes.
