Clogher

The late Mike Garry

It is with deep and abiding sorrow we record the passing of Michael (Mike) Garry, R.I.P, Lisblowick, Clogher, Claremorris, Co. Mayo. Mike passed away in his 98th year at his home, surrounded by his loving family. His was a long life well lived in his home community and immersed in the best possible way in its landscape, history, heritage, politics and community service.

Widely known, hugely respected and appreciated he brought merriment and awe to many an individual and audience. The good lord bestowed on Mike multiple talents, wit, humour and a fantastic art of storytelling from days gone by. Nobody could ‘skin a story’ quite like Mike, the tales were absorbing and the twist at the end was certain to entertain.

In talent terms, he was a natural; he just had that air of mirth and an immense appreciation of the many characters that flourished in the countryside and the ability to relate their escapades with a high comic effect.

His passing is a great loss to his family to the community and to many friends from far and wide with which he forged strong friendships.

Predeceased by his parents Bridie and Tom, wife Mary, son Tom, daughter-in-law Margaret, brother Fr Martin and sister Maureen, he is deeply regretted by his sons Pat, Dick, Michael and John, daughters Moira and Claire, son-in-law Michael, daughters-in-law Geraldine, Monica, Jill, Kris and Mary, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives, neighbours and many friends to whom profound sympathy is extended.

There was a large attendance present as his remains reposed at Clogher Community Centre on last Thursday evening, January 25, from 6pm with removal at 8pm to St. Anne’s Church, Belcarra. His Funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday, January 26, at 12 noon with the funeral proceeding to Burriscarra Cemetery. Ní beidh a leithéid ann aris agus ar dheis De go raibh a nAinm dilis.
