Camino trip

On Sunday, May 19, 25 Transition Year students from Ballinrobe Community School accompanied by teachers Shane Conlon, Barry Rourke and Liz Kelleher, travelled to Santiago De Compostela to complete the final 100km of 'The French Way' of The Camino.

Starting at the 100km mark in Ferreiros, they walked for five days staying in hostels in Portomarín, Palas De Rei, Arzúa, Pedrouzo and their final destination, Santiago De Compostela.

The students were issued with Pilgrim Passports, which they got stamped in various cafés and hostels along the route. They met many lovely people along the way, greeting all with a cheerful 'Buen Camino!', and asking them to sign their passports. There were prizes for those who collected the most signatures, with Kate Brennan scooping the first prize of €50 with an impressive 95 signatures, whilst both Faith Lally and George Crisp won €20 for 80 signatures each.

Students enjoyed meeting people from Switzerland, Mexico, Seattle, China and Ireland, among other countries. The use of mobile phone devices were at a minimum all week as the students enjoyed personal interactions with new and old friends.

The friendliness, positivity and respect they showed to all they met was commented on many times to the teachers. The Camino experience is one they will never forget with new friendships formed and existing friendships deepened.

It was a truly magical experience for all who travelled.

Roll on Camino 2025.

Mixed fortunes for U13 girls

The Ballinrobe under-13 girls’ team suffered a narrow 2-1 loss away to Westport United on Tuesday last.

In their previous game at home to Fahy Rovers at The Green, the Ballinrobe under-13’s recorded a splendid 1-0 victory, with Ellen Masterson netting the all-important winner.

The Red and White started brightly against Westport and their early endeavour was rewarded when a slick move ended with Ellen Masterson breaking the Westport defensive cover and rustling the back of the net.

Ballinrobe could have added further goals during the first half; however, against the run of play United restored parity just before the break and the sides were deadlocked at the interval.

Westport were fired up for the second half, with the hosts enjoying the lion’s share of possession in what was an epic league battle.

Ballinrobe couldn’t rediscover their first-half form and Westport added a vital second goal to snatch all three points.

However, a gallant Ballinrobe can be proud of their efforts on the day and they will take plenty of positives from what has been a memorable season.

Well done to all involved.

This was Ballinrobe’s final under-13 league fixture of the season.

Defeat to Killala

On Friday, June 7, the Ballinrobe Town hosted Killala at The Green in the Mayo Women's League Division One where a clinical display from the North Mayo side resulted in a heavy defeat for Ashling Concannon’s troops.

Killala blitzed their opponents during the first half and at half-time the visitors had mustered an unassailable 7-0 lead.

To their credit, the Robesiders put in a better display during the second half and managed to net consolation goals courtesy of Eleanor Whelan, and a brace from impressive substitute Abby Jennings.

No doubt Ballinrobe will learn from this defeat and come back a stronger side as the season progresses.
