Blitz na gCamain comes to Erris

Gaeltacht Iorrais is proud to announce the inaugural ‘Blitz na gCamáin’, taking place on Friday, September 27, from 10am to 1pm at Páirc CLG Cill Chomáin. This exciting event, organised by the club, will bring together National Schools from Erris to compete in a series of five-a-side hurling, camogie, and mixed-team competitions. Three perpetual shields will be up for grabs in what promises to be a thrilling day of sport.

The Mary Linnane Memorial Shield will be awarded to the winners of the camoige competition for 4th to 6th class girls. This shield honours Mary Linnane and her family's tireless efforts in the revival of hurling in Erris over the last 30 years. The Ciaran Mallon Memorial Shield will be presented to the boys competing in the hurling competition and they will be vying for this shield, commemorating one of Erris’ most talented full forwards. Ciaran Mallon tragically passed away in his prime. The organisers extend their gratitude to his parents Ricky and Mary, for allowing them to honour his memory in this special way.

Mixed teams will battle it out for the John Barrett Shield, named after the long-serving former chairman of Belmullet Hurling Club, whose leadership was instrumental in the club’s success. This shield will help keep alive the strong family ties to hurling and camogie in the region.

All national schools in Erris are invited to participate in the blitz, as the club aims to nurture the hurling and camogie stars of the future. Further information can be obtained from club chairperson, Ciarán Ó hEadhra, at 087 248 7907. The club extend its sincere thanks to the Mayo Hurling Board, Mayo GAA, and the Mayo Camogie Board for their invaluable support of the event. Special recognition is also given to the teachers, parents, and the outstanding facilities at Cill Chomáin GAA, all of which make this event possible. As a proud Gaeltacht club, they encourage everyone attending to use their ‘cúpla focal’ and help strengthen the use of Irish in Iorras. “Tá súil againn go leor Gaeilge a chloisint ar an lá, mar sin má tá cúpla focal agat labhair í agus cuideoidh muid le Gaeilge Iorras a láidriú.
