Local Notes: Lacken to host its first ever Heritage Day

Lacken
As part of National Heritage Week, everyone is warmly invited to Lacken's first-ever Heritage Day on Tuesday, August 18, from 12 noon to 3pm in the Lacken Sensory Garden, beside Lacken Church.
This special afternoon will celebrate the rich heritage and traditions of the area with something for all ages. Visitors can enjoy traditional music, song and dance, featuring local singers and a special appearance by The Strawboys/Set Dancers.
Highlights include a weaving demonstration by Annie Gambrill, showcasing the journey from sheep to wool, a basket weaving demonstration by Paul, and a boxty-making demonstration by Myra. Visitors can also enjoy an interesting talk by Des on the story of the bee to the honey jar, with locally produced honey available to purchase.
Children's workshops from 1 to 2pm include spinning on a drop spindle, butter making, clay crafts, together with a fun Bee Happy workshop. Families can also enjoy a treasure hunt around the beautiful Sensory Garden, making it a wonderful day out for children and adults alike.
Displays of historical costumes, vintage tools and woodworking, and wool crafts will be on view throughout the afternoon. Refreshments, including homemade boxty, teas, coffees and treats, will be available, along with D'Briasta Ice Cream.
The organisers extend a very warm invitation to friends and families from neighbouring parishes and surrounding communities to join them for this special occasion. As Lacken's first Heritage Day, they hope it will become an annual celebration of local history, traditions and culture.

LBK walking group continue to meet every Monday and Thursday mornings at 10am.
The Monday walks follow local coastal routes of approximately 5-6km offering a relaxed and enjoyable way to stay active while taking in the beauty of our local area.
The Thursday wanderers are a little more adventurous, exploring routes along the Killala greenway, Kilcummin Head, Moygownagh and Ballycastle and scenic Glens, where they enjoy some of the most breathtaking views North Mayo has to offer.

Mass in Ballycastle Cemetery on Sunday, August 2nd, at 12 noon (weather permitting).
The death occurred last week of Philomena Tighe, nèe Killeen, Lisbrin, Ballycastle.
Sympathy is extended to her husband John, sons Gerry, Donal and Sèan, daughters-in-law Nessa and Melissa, grandchildren, her brother Arty Killeen, sister Rita Duffy, nieces, nephews, sister-in-law, brother-in-law, relatives and friends.

The Bonninfinglas Annual Cemetery Mass will take place on Friday, July 31, at 7.30pm. All are welcome.
Your prayers are requested for Seán Ruane, Glanduff, Foxford who was laid to rest last week and Michael Devaney, Leeds, who will be laid to rest during the week.
Seán Ruane was a cousin to Paddy and Michael James Ruane and Michael Devaney is a nephew to Agnes Judge and Chrissy Walsh.

Bonniconlon Cemetery Mass will take place on Saturday, August 1, at 3pm. A voluntary collection will take place for the upkeep of the cemetery.

The Children's choir appeals to any child who would like to play a role in their monthly church liturgy to sit in the company of the choir. A new Bonniconlon Biodiversity Group has recently been established under the umbrella of the Community Council.
As part of its development, they would welcome ideas, suggestions, or proposals from local groups and organisations that may help shape future biodiversity projects or community-led environmental actions in the area. They would also like to invite expressions of support from established community groups who may wish to support this initiative.
