Pickleball comes to Kiltimagh

Did you know that Kiltimagh has its own pickleball club?

In case you didn’t know, Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. Players use solid paddles and a plastic ball with holes. The paddles are usually made from wood or composite materials. Pickleball is typically played to 11 points, and a team must win by two points. Points can only be scored by the serving team. It can be played as singles or doubles, with doubles being more common.

Playing pickleball can improve cardiovascular fitness, hand-eye coordination, and social interaction, making it a fun way to stay active. And now, you can play pickleball locally.

“My sisters in Cork and New York have been playing it a long time and said how much fun it is so we're giving it a go,” Teresa Coleman, the organiser of Kiltimagh Pickleball Club, told the Western People. “We had two ladies from the Westport club very kindly came to help us. And it's fun learning."

Teresa said the club plays on Saturday mornings in Barnacarroll Sports Complex.

“The game is played on a badminton-size court,” she explained “and Barnacarroll has four courts marked out, which is great. We play there on Saturday mornings, from 10.40 to 11.40am. We play to the standard rules, and we are still figuring them out! We play doubles so four players get to play each match.

"I contacted the Mayo Sports Partnership and they are lending us equipment until we get sorted. We have three nets on loan from them which means 12 people can be playing at the one time. There is a lot of interest, which is great. The games are short and it's fun to swap in and out after games. We’d love to have more players - the more the merrier.”

Teresa says each players pays €5 per morning to cover the cost of renting the hall.

“We got great help from the Westport group, Orna, Mairead and Joan came so far to help us out, and we’re very grateful. And Kate at Mayo Sports Partnership has been very helpful too. We’d like to thank them.”.

If you’d like to give pickleball a go, you can contact Teresa on 089-4841267.

Kiltimagh Knock United’s men’s senior team were knocked out of the Connacht Cup last week, going down 3-2 to Ballinasloe Town.

The fightback was short lived, however, as Ballinasloe got a third a minute before the break. David Owusu reduced the margin to the minimum with twenty minutes remaining, but despite their best efforts, KKU couldn’t get an equaliser.

Micheal Schlingermann was back in goal for KKU, after an absence through injury and the Western People understands he has been called up to the Mayo panel for their forthcoming Oscar Traynor Cup tie against Galway on November 10th.
