Next Saturday, May 4, Belmullet will celebrate Mayo Day and there is no finer place to enjoy and experience the atmosphere than Belmullet. The Mayo Day music stage will be taking up residence in the heart of the town with the first notes being struck from 12 noon and will continue into the early evening with something for everyone to get their toe tapping. The dockside will transform into a food lover’s delight, with the ever-popular food village not only showcasing the best of locally produced food and drinks, but it will also play host to some of the finest chefs and cooks in the region who will be demonstrating their culinary skills to the audience. While you’re enjoying the delights make sure to check out Pobal na Gaeilge – the Mayo Day Irish language and cultural hub and immerse yourself in the Irish language.

On Barrack Street check out the fantastic offerings of the crafters of Mayo, with everything from knits to art works, it is the perfect place to bring home something to remember your Mayo Day experience by and support the wonderful local crafters of Mayo. On Main Street, motoring enthusiasts will be delighted with a selection of vintage and classic cars on display for the day. Just a short walk from the middle of the town will bring you to Áras Inis Gluaire which is set to become a buzzing hub of art, family entertainment, food vans and the ever-popular displays from the Mayo Fire Service.

‘Walked the Walk’ with As Darragh Did

What an absolutely amazing day on Shore Road recently. The sun shining bright in the clear blue sky as Belmullet Tidal Pool and Erris Utd club members with their families and friends ‘Walked the Walk’ with As Darragh Did. Together everyone covered a total of 522km. Stickers, bubbles, hop scotch, lollies and lots of smiling faces, for many completed with a cool off dip in the pool. Some donated online via the donation link and many more in the donation box on the day, and in just one hour they gathered a fantastic €800. If anyone else would like to donate go to: https://www.idonate.ie/event/walkingthewalkwithasdarraghdid.

Mural on gable end of Hefferon's former shop

A really great mural by the supremely talented Sligo artist Friz has appeared on a gable end of Hefferon’s former shop in Eachleim. People can see Frizs work in Foxford, Ballina, Claremorris, and Enniskillen and as far away as Mexico. Street art is always a brilliant addition to any village, and especially art that tells the stories of history, heritage, flora and fauna and the things that make an area special.

For the peninsula tours this will be a regular stop now, combining the stories of St Brendan the Navigator, guided by the celestial Plough, and all the unnamed monsters that lived in the unmapped seas beneath.

Erris Utd

Congratulations to Maggie Lavelle and her fellow Mayo U15 team and management on a brilliant 4-1 win over Kerry in the interleague semi-final in Castlebar. The club wish Maggie and her teammates all the best in the final next month.

The Iorras U13 (B) team had a very good 3-1 win at home v Kilmurray (C) recently in Carnenash with goals from Cathal Barrett, Oisín Cosgrove and Kevin Meenaghan to secure the win. Well done to everyone involved and special thanks to referee Killian Flannery for helping out at short notice.

Iorras U13 (A) side kept their great start to the season going with a great win recently away to Kilmurry. It was a super game from 2 very evenly matched teams. Iorras grinded out a 4-3 win with goals from Luca, Junior, Fergal and Danny. Iorras were under serious pressure for the last 10 minutes as Kilmurry went looking for an equaliser but Iorras shored up the defence and Kilmurry couldn't find a way through. Erris Utd extend thanks to Kilmurry for a great game, and they look forward to another battle in a few weeks.
