Poker Champion

John Reynolds is the new Kiltimagh poker champion after winning the final of the Winter League in Teach O'Hora on Wednesday night last. Fourteen players competed for a prizepool of €2,820. John clinched the title and the Jeremy Dee Memorial Cup by beating Julian Keane heads up after a deal to chop the prize money. Defending champion Keith Lydon was third and Enda Ruane fourth.

A new fifteen week league starts this Wednesday, January 25, in Teach O’Hora starting at 8pm. Entry is €20 with one re entry allowed for 90 minutes. €5 from every entry goes towards the league final prizepool with the rest paid out in prizemoney on the night. The league runs every Wednesday night with fourteen players qualifying for the end of season final to play for a prizepool of approx €3,000.

There were twenty entries for the Westport Cup satellite on January 7 with three players all winning a €300 entry to the big game. The Westport Cup is the main event of the Irish Poker Tour festival in the Castlecourt Hotel at the end of the month and boasts a guaranteed prizepool of €100,000.

Fitness fundraiser

Despite the recent frosty conditions, participants in the Kiltimagh Knock United January fitness fundraising challenge have been getting out and doing the hard yards.

The aim is to chalk up 1,500 kilometres over the month of January in support of The Hub, which is ran by Western Care and located at the KK clubhouse in Cloonloee.

Donations can be made through the dedicated GoFundMe page or by putting your donation in a marked envelope and placing it in one of the many 50/50 boxes in shops around the area. All donations greatly appreciated.

Captain Chris

Kiltimagh Knock United’s Chris McHale Tarpey captained the Mayo U16 Inter League team last weekend. Although Mayo finished second to Donegal, having defeated Galway, Sligo and Roscommon, they now have a home quarter final game against West Cork on January 28. Best of luck to the boys in the quarter final.

Awards evening

All players and parents are invited to the Kiltimagh Bord na nÓg awards evening, which will take place on February 5 from 6 to 8pm in the Cill Aodain Court Hotel. Celebrating a year of great football in 2023 for GAA and LGFA players and looking ahead to 2024. Lots of trophies and medals to be presented on the night.

Choral Society

The Cill Aodain Choral Society had two very successful concerts in the Linenhall Theatre in Castlebar last week. The forty strong choir were joined by Swinford tenor Cathal Gavin and their choice of songs was much appreciated by the large attendance on both nights. The Musical Director Finola Higgins is also musical director of the Ballinrobe Musical Society who are presenting their show Phantom of the Opera in early February so a busy time for Finola who celebrated a ‘big birthday’ last week.

The late Ken Manley

The death took place unexpectedly on January 6, of Ken Manley, Curneen, Murneen, Kiltimagh, after a life lived well, full of love and laughter.

Predeceased by his son Freddie and his brother Michael, Ken was a loving dad to Daisy, Jack, Lottie, Finbar, Kara, Ez, Peter and Asha. Loving father-in-law to Colm, Marian and Brett and devoted grandad to James, Indi, Verity, Violet, Ella, Teddy, Amelia, Hunter, Harrison, Ky, Jett and Imogen. He will be sadly missed by his heartbroken family and friends.

Reposing was at O’Hora’s Funeral Home on Tuesday evening, January 9, where a service to celebrate his life was held on Wednesday morning after which Ken was taken to Shannon Crematorium. Sympathy is extended to the bereaved family.

Oscar Traynor Cup

Kiltimagh Knock United was well represented on the Mayo League Oscar Traynor team that won the Connaught region title with a win over Roscommon at Milebush.

Congratulations to players Cormac Caulfield, Dan Duffy, Jack O’Connor and the club's senior team coach James Costello who was part of the backroom team.

Charlestown Drama Group

A meeting of Charlestown Drama Group will be held in the Arts Centre on Thursday, July 28, at 8pm. If you are interested in joining them they would love to meet you, no experience necessary.

GAA 50/50

Congratulations to 50/50 winner Carol Roache, Aidan St, Kiltimagh, picking up a jackpot for €686 at the draw held on Saturday night, January 13, in The Tavern. Evening classes

Part time evening classes will be starting in January/February at St Louis Community School, Kiltimagh. Classes on offer include art, Bridge for Beginners, Introduction to CAD (Solid Works), photography, public speaking, wellbeing, learning the tin whistle, cooking with confidence, Level 5 QQI, Care of Older person, care skills, special needs assisting, children with additional needs, infection prevention and control, bookkeeping and computerised, payroll manual and computerised, Level 6 QQI.

Courses will run according to demand. Payments for Levels 5 and 6 QQI can be made in instalments during the duration of the course. Bereavement support

The Knock Shrine Bereavement Support group meet every Wednesday at 11am at the Family Centre, Knock. Following a family bereavement you can feel very lonely. Dublin death

The death took place recently of Patricia Nelson (née Gilmartin), Dublin and late of Sligo and Kiltimagh. Patricia was the daughter of the late Charlie and Kate Gilmartin, Main St, Kilitmagh. Beloved wife of the late Brendan, loving mother of Kathy, Deirdre and Peter she will be sadly missed by her children and their partners, grandchildren, extended family, neighbours and friends. Sympathy is extended to her bereaved family and to her niece and nephews in Kiltimagh.

Removal took place to the Victorian Chapel, Mount Jerome, Harold’s Cross for Funeral Service followed by cremation. May she rest in peace.

ALONE

Paul Stafford, the Volunteer Support Officer for ALONE is urgently looking for volunteers in Mayo and its surrounding areas for older people who need befriending for up to one hour per week and/or telephone support for up to 2 hours per week. Their befriending program is designed to help older people combat loneliness and isolation. They now need your help more than ever. Make a St Brigid’s Cross

Get ready for St Brigid’s Day with a free, drop-in activity to make a St Brigid’s Cross, from 2 to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday, January 27 and 28, at the National Museum of Ireland – Country Life, Turlough Park, Castlebar. See some different styles of St Brigid’s Crosses on display and have a go at making your own cross to bring home.
