Local Notes: Harvest Noon Theatre Group to stage award winning play as fundraiser for Claremorris and District Lions Club.

Harvest Moon Theatre Group will stage their award-winning play, ‘Now and Then’ in the Town Hall on Friday, September 27 commencing at 8pm. The event is a fundraiser for The Claremorris and District Lions Club. Harvest Moon Theatre Group is based in Claremorris, Co Mayo, with members drawn from all over Connacht. The cast of ‘Now and Then’ is made up of Rosemary Dixon, Vera Kilgallon, Kevin Woods and John Morley. Rosemary Dixon was part of the Garrymore Drama Group for many years and is no stranger to Claremorris audiences. Vera Kilgallon, from Mayo Abbey, is an All-Ireland winning actress. Kevin Woods is a native of Roscommon and John Morley is originally from Bekan, and is now living in Oranmore. Both have many acting awards to their credit for stage and screen. This Friday night, September 20, is Culture Night. This is a national event celebrating the richness and diversity of culture in Ireland, connecting people to cultural activities locally and nationally, and aims to open up pathways to ongoing engagement. Special and unique events and workshops are held at participating locations, and, with the support of the Arts Council and local authorities across the island of Ireland, all activities are made available to the public, free of charge.
This year’s Culture Night in Claremorris promises to be a reflection of diversity, equity, and inclusion. There will be a Ukrainian band, a Brazilian group, and local talent, as well as DJ Conan, at the event in the Town Hall. In addition to the performances, there will be international food, provided by community partners. From 7pm, visitors can sample dishes from different corners of the world, to complement the evening’s entertainment.
Claremorris Library will host a Dungeons and Dragons workshop for families, and there will be Family Yoga from 5.30 to 7pm in the Town Hall Studio. Space is limited, so early booking is advised through the library or email. dmctigue@mayococo.ie.
If you can’t attend in person Claremorris Community Radio and the Town Hall will offer live coverage online. Whether you’re tuning in from afar or attending in person, Culture Night 2024 promises to be a night to remember.
Sympathy is extended to the Kavanagh family on the passing of Sheila Hession (née Kavanagh,) Boston, USA and formerly of Lower Mace, Claremorris. Sheila died peacefully after a short illness and is predeceased by her sister Marion. Sheila is survived by her brothers Andrew, John, P.J. and sisters Margaret and Martina.
Sheila's funeral took place in Boston, and a Month’s Mind Mass will take place for the repose of her soul on October 19, at 11am in the Church of the Our Lady, Barnacarroll, Claremorris.
Sympathy is extended to Dr Gary Curran of Malvern Medical Practice, on the passing of his father, John (Johnny) Curran, of Dalgin, Milltown, who passed away peacefully at his home on September 3, aged 84. Johnny is survived by his wife Mary (nee Burke) and son Gary, and is predeceased by his parents Mary and Michael Curran, brothers Jim and Michael and sisters Maura and Bridget. Johnny will be missed by his wife, son, brother Padraic, sisters Nora, Peg, Chris and Anne, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends. John was laid to rest in Addergoole Cemetery after Requiem Mass in St Joseph’s Church, Milltown.
Adam Beirne was the extra time hero as Claremorris defeated Knockmore on a scoreline of 2-15 to 1-13 to win the County Junior A football title, last weekend. When all around him were beginning to tire, Beirne found a surge of energy to power forward, and ended the game with an impressive haul of two goals and four points.
Congratulations are extended to Larry and Freddie Goggins who celebrated their golden wedding jubilee with a family gathering in honour of the occasion. Larry from Cartownacross, married Freddie Heneghan from Woodstock, Ballindine, in St Joseph’s Church, Ballindine, in 1974, with a reception afterwards for family and friends in the Travellers Friend Hotel in Castlebar.
Sympathy is extended to Seán Walsh, Maureen Finnerty and Patsy Stevens, on the passing of Thomas Walsh - better known as Tommy Joe, of Curlisduane, Ballyglass, Claremorris, on September 8. Tommy Joe died peacefully after a short illness. He is predeceased by his parents Tom and Teresa. Tommy Joe is survived by wife Joan, daughter Aideen, son Bryan and grandson Cian, sisters Rosaleen Halligan (Ballyglass), Josephine Walsh (Dublin), Bernie O’Connor (Cavan), brother Sean, brothers-in-law Jerry, Michael, Joe and Patsy, sisters-in-law Gosia and Maureen, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, relatives, neighbours and of friends. Tommy Joe will be sadly missed by all his friends at Ballyglass FC. He was a founding member of the club and lined out for their teams for many years. Tommy Joe was laid to rest in Burriscarra Cemetery, after Funeral Mass in St Mary’s Church, Carnacon.

Women's Collective Claremorris is offering a Women in Leadership course. This course is designed to help women take the first step in leadership, whether it's raising a hand at a meeting or joining a local committee. Claremorris golfers defeated Dunmore in the quarter final of the Connaught shield, last week. Connor McLoughlin and Conor O’Brien won their away match 5 and 4. John Finn and John Haverty, also playing away, won 4 and 3. Playing at home Shane McDonagh and Derek Reilly halved their match, while Luke Gibbons and Dermot Costello won 3 and 1. The team will meet Swinford in the semi-final, on Saturday, September 21, at 2.30.
There was shock in the community last week, to learn of the unexpected death of Kieran Johnston, Clareville, Claremorris, and Manor Village, Castlebar. Kieran was in his late 20s, and was a stonemason by trade. Kieran is survived by his mother Ruth and father Johnnie, sister Jade, brother Johnnie, soulmate Aoife Killeen, children Tyler, Kenzie, Kyle, Wayne, Callum, Darcy, Casey, Korey and Maisy, nephews, nieces, relatives and all the family circle and his many friends, to whom sympathy is tendered. Kieran was laid to rest in the New Cemetery, Newport Road, Castlebar after Funeral Mass at the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar.
Harvest Moon Theatre Group, which is based in Claremorris, is interested in hearing from anyone who would like to get involved in drama production. The group competes in the national Three-Act circuit, and has qualified for the All-Ireland Finals in the two years since the group was formed. The group would like to hear from anyone interested in on stage or off stage, roles. The off stage roles include admin, tech, stage management and road crew. The group wants to make it clear that under competition rules, these are non-paid roles. Tom Gilligan has been appointed as the new Director of Services for the Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District. Tom has moved from the Ballina District, as part of a reshuffle. His appointment has been welcomed by local councillors. Mr Gilligan said that his focus will be on a number of issues, particularly around the development of social and affordable housing, roads, particularly the N17, and road safety measures. He also wants to tackle vacancy and dereliction of properties, and noted that there is a lot of dereliction in the town, which he wants to address.
The community is saddened to hear of the death of Mary Mullaney (nèe Boyce,) of Mayfield Lake, last week. Mary was a popular lady in the town.
Mary is predeceased by her husband Jimmy, parents Billy and Kathleen (Cotty), her brother Liam and infant brother Patrick. Mary will be sadly missed by her heartbroken family, daughter Carol, son Keith, her three grandchildren, Carol’s partner Colin and Keith’s partner Avril, brother Brian, sisters Anne, Monica, Catherine, Geraldine, Patricia, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, neighbours and her many friends. Mary was laid to rest in St. Colman’s Cemetery, after Funeral Mass.
A new defibrillator has been installed in Kilbeg. It is a semi-automatic defibrillator with heated cabinet. This defibrillator is located on the wall outside the College Green housing estate with the postcode F12E8W8. This is an unlocked case, which saves valuable time when retrieving the defibrillator. Potential users are reminded to ensure that when retrieving a defibrillator, to also bring the small Responder bag with them.
Margaret Jordan (nee Nally) who passed on September 5 was born in Knock in 1946, and emigrated to New York in 1974. She was an active member of the Irish American Society of Nassau, Suffolk and Queens, and revelled in volunteering for, and participating in, many dinner dances, parades, and other events over the years. She loved traditional Irish dance, music and sport. In 1997, she proudly marched as the Grand Marshall of the Mineola St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
Margaret, of Boynton Beach, Florida, and formerly of Sea Cliff, New York, and Cuillatinny, Knock, was 78. She passed peacefully in hospice care surrounded by her children and sisters. She will be remembered for her positive spirit, her laugh, and her great love of family.
Margaret was the beloved wife of the late Michael Jordan. She is survived by daughter Caroline (Ned) Houghton, son Michael (Erica) Jordan, and granddaughter Aria Bridget Jordan, all of Glen Head, NY.
Margaret is predeceased by her parents Michael and Bridget Nally and sister Mary Gallagher. She is also survived by siblings Noreen McCrossan, Kathleen Mellett, James and Michael Nally, as well their families, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
