Local Notes: Great victory for Ballinrobe U14s in Shield Final

The Ballinrobe U14 Gaelic football team that defeated Ballintubber to claim the Under-14 (A) Shield championship.
Ballinrobe recorded a 4-8 to 2-7 victory against Ballintubber in what was an entertaining Under-14 (A) Shield Final, which was played in Hollymount on Monday week last.
Both sides displayed plenty of endeavour during the opening stages of the game, with Ballintubber registering the first score, a pointed free by their wing-forward David Keane.
However, on nine minutes, Ballinrobe’s busy midfielder Naoise Burke pounced for a goal, before his team-mate Sean Grimes added a point.
Burke further enhanced the Ballinrobe lead by recording his first point of the evening on 12 minutes and the Robesiders game plan received a significant boost on 13 minutes. A marvellous delivery from Caelan O’Brien was snaffled up by Ronan Jennings and the latter finished with aplomb, thus garnering a 2-2 to 0-2 lead for the maroon and yellow.
Ballintubber though, dominated the final eight minutes of the first half, with Keane plundering a major on 23 minutes.
Ballintubber busily searched for further scores before the break, but the Ballinrobe defence was superbly marshalled by Fiachra O’Loughlin, Fionn Jennings, and Thomas Mellett Jennings, and the Robesiders led 2-5 to 1-2 during the half-time pep-talks.
The Abbeysiders made a bright start to the second period, with points arriving from Sean Feeney and Keane.
At the other end, Ballinrobe’s Ronan Jennings very nearly fashioned a third three-pointer for his team-mates on 36 minutes, but his angled drive flew narrowly wide.
The second half was keenly contested, but the pendulum swung in Ballinrobe’s favour on 44 minutes when they were awarded a penalty, which was confidently dispatched by Grimes.
On 55 minutes, the Ballinrobe custodian Cillian O’Connor guided over a well-taken free, which shunted the south Mayo side into a commanding 3-8 to 1-5 lead.
But a brave Ballintubber kept plugging away and the red and white pulled a goal back on 59 minutes, courtesy of their energetic corner-forward, John Feeney.
Ballinrobe closed out proceedings impressively and one minute into second half injury-time, a solo and go free by Ronan Jennings saw the midfielder evade the Ballintubber defence before setting-up Caelan O’Brien, and the latter rustled the back of the net.
After the full-time whistle, the Ballinrobe players, management and supporters celebrated a memorable victory.
