Burke wins McWilliam Open

Claremorris golfer David Burke was crowned the overall winner of McWilliam Midweek Open at Claremorris Golf Club recently.

The McWilliam Midweek Open was run over a 13-week period, on Tuesdays, Wednesday, and Thursdays, throughout the summer and culminated with Burke winning the tournament on Sunday, October 1, by shooting a phenomenal score of -3 on the day.

David, who is a member of Claremorris Golf Club, won a fabulous prize of a two-night bed and breakfast stay at Farnham Estate Spa & Golf Resort in Co Cavan, with dinner in Maxwell’s Grill.

Over 450 entrants took part in the McWilliam Midweek Open, which was an outstanding success.

“A lot of business was brought into Claremorris from the event. There was a very high standard of golf that was played throughout the whole competition,” Billy Pierik, PRO of Claremorris Golf Club, told the Western People.

Out of the 450 entrants, it was narrowed down to 12 players for the final week, where David came out on top.

“We’d like to send on a huge thank you to the McWilliam Park Hotel for sponsoring it. We’re delighted that a club member won it. David is a very well-liked member of our club.”

Claremorris seniors

Well done to Claremorris senior football team who retained their senior status for 2024, as they defeated Ballyhaunis 0-9 to 0-7 in their Mayo Senior Football Championship Relegation semi-final.

It was great to see so many young players like the two Hurleys, Dara and Niall, who kicked a crucial score towards the end, and Paul Gilmore help the Blues stay up. It bodes well the future for sure.

Colin Gill was the star turn as the lads trailed 0-5 to 0-3 at half-time and outscored the 2022 intermediate champions 0-6 to 0-2 in the second half.

Hopefully, the lads won’t be in this position next year, but it great to get out of the relegation zone.
