Local notes from Balla, Manulla and Clogher

Caoimhe Horan, from Balla and a recent graduate of the BBs (Hons) in Digital Marketing at TUS Athlone Campus, was awarded the the bronze ‘Digital Student of the Year’ at this year’s Digital Media Awards (DMAs) in Dublin on Friday, September 29 last for her final-year live capstone project which saw her devise and implement a digital marketing strategy for Pax Whole Foods & Eco Goods (Retail). The death has occurred on October 1, of James (Jim) Flanagan, R.I.P, Gortaphuill, Ballyglass, Claremorris, Co. Mayo. Jim passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family. Pre-deceased by his parents James and Delia, his sister Rita Staed and his brother Tom, he is deeply regretted by his wife Evelyn, daughters Josephine, Patricia, Caroline and Regina, and sons Seamus and Fergus, his sister, Nancy Dempsey, Lisnolan, Balla, his sons-in-law Leo, Tadgh and Pat and daughters-in-law Mary and June, his grandchildren Fintan, Gerry, Katie, Amy, TJ, Jamie, Joshua, Jessica, Isabelle, Harriet, Charlotte and Max, nieces, nephews, relatives, friends and wonderful neighbours to whom sincere sympathy is tendered.
Jim’s remains reposed at Balla Funeral Home on Monday from 5 until 7pm with removal taking place on Tuesday from his home to the Church of Our Lady Queen of Peace and St. Gerald, Mayo Abbey for Funeral Mass at 11.30am with the burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery. The county final of Senior Scór will be held in Balla Community Centre on Friday, October 13. The evening begins with the Tráth na gCeist' (Quiz) at 8pm. The quiz will be followed at approximately 9pm by stage events. A detailed description of what is involved for all sections may be found in the rule book.
Senior Scór caters for anyone who is over the age of 17 this year. In regard to dancing competitions - a club may include a maximum of two members in their final year of eligibility for Scór na nÓg in an 8-hand troupe in both Rince Foirne and Rince Seit competitions only.
For ease of compiling and inclusion in the program etc., Scór Mhaigh Eo would appreciate if entries could be forwarded by email to scor.mayo@gaa.ie not later than this Wednesday, October 11. Scór Mhaigh Eo acknowledges that it may not be possible to have information submitted in advance, in which case entries will be accepted on the night. Members must be registered with their club and be able to provide their membership number 3 days (at the very latest) before the date of the competition.
‘On This Day In Mayo’ a new book by Máirtín G Ó Maicín will be launched in the Festival Dome, Bridge St, Castlebar, tomorrow Wednesday, October 11, at 7pm as part of the Wild Atlantic Words Festival. The fruit of four years of extensive research the book seeks to tell the story of Mayo by connecting the 366 days of the year with an event of significance relating to the county, or with an event pertaining to a person from the county. There is a compelling story attached to every date. Stretching from the 12th century all the way up to April 2023, it is a timeless collector’s item for anyone from or with a grá for Mayo. All are welcome to the launch and former Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, will do the honours.
In anticipation of the club returning on October 20, allowing for time to train new leaders - email: name of youth member, add: 1st, 2nd or 3rd year and parent/guardian email address. Application does not guarantee a place pending numbers. It is open to youth members living in the Balla geographical area. The club runs on Fridays from 7.30-9pm during school calendar.
Manulla FC lotto jackpot draw took place on October 1, and there was no jackpot winner. The numbers drawn were 1, 11, 27 and 32. The €25 consolation prizes were Leo Heaney, Castlebar; Patricia Freyne, Manulla and Sienna Walsh, Lakelands. The latest draw was on October 8, when the jackpot stood at a highly attractive sum of €11,300.
Manulla U16 girls were crowned U16 Division 1 winners last week after a home win over Ballyglass in their final league game of the season, with the goals coming from Amber Glavey (2), Nicole Ryan (2), Lucy English and Anna Burton. The girls went through their league campaign unbeaten, a great achievement by these talented young ladies. Gratitude also is extended to their brilliant coach Suzanne Cunnane and John Hennelly.
Congratulations to the three Manulla FC girls Anna Burton, Grace Mulroy and Sarah Cunningham who have been selected for the FAI U15 Centre of Excellence squad. The training takes place every Monday night in Solar 21 Park, Castlebar, and is headed up Danny O'Leary. This is a great achievement by the girls and the best of luck from all at Manulla FC is extended to the talented three ladies.
Balla GAA lotto jackpot prize stood at €3,100 for the draw in The Rendezvous on Thursday, September 28. 1, 3, 11 and 29 were the numbers drawn and there was no winner of the jackpot. The €30 winners were Jody Kilkenny (standing order), Martina McNamara (online) and Gerard Flanagan (online). The most recent draw was held on Thursday, October 5, when the jackpot was €3,200.
