Former Kiltimagh Knock United player Roisin Molloy has been nominated for Player of the Year in the League of Ireland.
Roisin rounded off a remarkable SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division season by being named the Player of the Month for October.
Roisin, from Gurteen, Co Sligo, played in all 20 league matches for Athlone Town, playing a key role in helping the Midlanders secure their first league title, following their triumph in the President’s Cup. Athlone were also runners-up in Sports Direct FAI Cup.
Roisin concluded the season ranked second in key passes (16), third in progressive runs (60), fourth in expected assists (4.35), seventh in shots on goal (43), and 11th in crosses (48). The 22-year-old scored five league goals, but it was her overall play across both midfield and forward positions that made her stand out. She excelled at creating space, linking defence with attack, and consistently delivering standout performances.
Roisin joined Athlone in 2021 having played with Kiltimagh Knock United for two seasons at Under 19 level and also featuring in the club's senior women's side. Before that, Roisin played for Sligo Rovers Under-17s for two years and also lined out with Castlebar Celtic and Gurteen prior to that move. The winners will be announced at a ceremony in the Aviva Stadium on Tuesday, December 3rd.
Kiltimagh Tidy Towns has seen its national score increase to 334 points – up nine from last year.
The adjudicators said that the town’s entry was clear, concise and extremely well-illustrated, but they urged the local committee to develop a better medium to long-term plan. They said that the committee appear to be well-supported by the local community, including local schools. The specific project that the local committee identified for particular effort this year is the planting of approximately 4,000 trees of different species at four different locations throughout the town.
“We applaud your ongoing work on the former railway station,” the report said, “and the opening of Ireland’s first Velorail. We hope that this is really successful.”
The adjudicators said there were lots of lovely shopfronts in Kiltimagh.
“Teach O’Hora is one such. The mural on the gable might be in need of a touch up soon. The Folk Café and Heneghan’s Pharmacy were also among the premises we admired. The Post Box Café looks so good! Another diner/café was being painted on the day of our visit. The Louis Community School is a very impressive building and premises. We also noted that a large (presumably former commercial premises) on Aiden Street had been painted recently.
"Your street name signs looked great, the one at Main Street rear was positively gleaming! The Kiltimagh Park Hotel has lovely grounds and looked busy on the day. The trade centre across the way is an interesting building.”
The adjudicators also commented on the Emigrant Park.
“This represents a big boost for biodiversity for Kiltimagh and you describe how schoolchildren are already using this site. It will only get better for biodiversity as it progresses.
"We visited the Wetlands Park on the Swinford Road. This is a really impressive site that is a very important location for biodiversity which will also continue to improve. We’d suggest removing the seaside plants information. Some of the other information points will need to be renewed as they weather. Even for the non-nature enthusiast, this is a lovely place for a short walk.”
The adjudicators said there is work to do in relation to the anti-litter actions which need to be undertaken by the local group. They noted the invaluable assistance from the Scouts and the GAA club, however, they believe that Kiltimagh has yet to get to grips with this somewhat tricky category of the competition.
The report complimented the weekly clean-ups around the town, and the Community Employment and RSS staff too.
Unfortunately, Kiltimagh was not litter-free on the day of the inspection. Broken glass was noted at the bottle banks. Quite a bit of litter was also noted in front of the Bank of Ireland building. There was a broken litterbin at the Market Square. However, there was very little litter to be seen on the approach roads.
The report complimented the new signage, picnic areas and outdoor seating on many of the housing estates and the great efforts with window-boxes which has a good effect on the main streets.
The adjudicators were impressed with The Kiltimagh Poetry Trail, describing it as an excellent idea that celebrates the works of six Mayo poets.
The report concluded that this was an interesting and informative visit to Kiltimagh.
“We are very impressed with your efforts for the town. You have great fabric within the town with which to work. We know that you will continue to improve.”
The diversity of events at The Folk Café continues to impress. A crafting event will take place there on Monday next, November 18th, at 11am.
