Local Notes: Fantastic boxing tournament in Glenamoy

Johnny Carey presenting Thomas McGuire with his Fight of the Night award on his display against a much taller opponent in what was an epic battle at the recent Geesala Boxing Club tournament in Healy’s Hall in Glenamoy.

The Geesala Boxing Club recently held its annual tournament at Healy’s Hall in Glenamoy and as usual, a full house turned out.

Club chairman Gerry Coyle was the MC on the night and kicked off proceedings by paying tribute to George Bashford, who tragically lost his life in a motorbike accident in Thailand recently. George was an active IABA referee and judge and served in that role both in Glenamoy and Geesala. Gerry also paid tribute to Sonny Sweeney, Tom McGuire and Martin Goonan, all former members of  Geesala Boxing Club, who passed away in the past year. As a final tribute, timekeeper Mícheál Ó Conaill counted them out with eight gongs of his bell in the tradition of boxing.

The grand old man of boxing Johnny Carey was taken by surprise when he was called into the ring to be presented with a birthday cake by the club's European and world champions Aoibhe Carrabine and Keira Ginty to mark his 80th birthday. Johnny was on hand again at the end of the night to make a presentation for the fight of the night to young Thomas McGuire of Dooyork who overcame a much taller opponent in what was an epic battle.

Chief coach and secretary Pat McDonagh paid tribute to the hosts Michael and Bernie McAndrew for the warm welcome the club always receives at Healy’s Hall and he also thanked the local businesses for sponsoring the event as well as the public for showing up in force every year.

Double success for U14 team

Well done to all the Iorras Aontaithe U14 squad and their managers, David McDonnell and Declan Conmy, on adding the Shield to their League success for 2023 when overcoming Kilmurray in a tense encounter in Milebush Park in Castlebar on Monday afternoon, October 30. The game was delayed for over an hour and a half.

Iorras took the lead halfway into the opening half when Jamie Ruddy, who was just inside his area, sent an excellent pass out to the left side of the final third to Jack Gaughan, who then whipped a cross into the box for Johnny Carey to slot home from close range.

It remained 1-0 at the break, but not long into the second half, Kilmurray levelled and looked the more energetic side. Erris, however, continued to push forward, and in the 80th minute, with Kilmurray committing players for their lead goal, Erris counter-attacked with Jamie Ruddy outpacing three defenders to score with a great finish.

Kilmurray had chances to score but Erris keeper Lorcan Sweeney was in good form.

The squad is sponsored by Michael Conroy Motors.
