Local Notes: Erris golf day raises funds for local school

A group of golfers who participated in the recent Paddy Joe Goonan Memorial Open Golf Day at Doohoma Golf Club. This year’s annual event doubled as a fundraising event for Scoil Náisiunta Dhumha Thuama (Doohoma National School) MUGA Development Fund.

Thank you to everybody who attended and participated in the Paddy Joe Goonan Memorial Open Golf Day at Doohoma Golf Club on Saturday, August 16th.

This year’s annual event doubled as a fundraising event for Scoil Náisiunta Dhumha Thuama (Doohoma National School) MUGA development fund. The event was a huge success and was attended by a big crowd of enthusiastic golfers. 

Thanks to all who donated to this worthy cause in advance of the event and those who visited the Golf Clubhouse on the day to offer good wishes, support and donations. Special thanks to the Goonan family, Annette, Mary, Seamie and PJ, and Breege and Gerry. 

The weather on the day was magnificent and a great day's golf was had by all. Thanks to the Sea Rod Inn for the hospitality and support and for hosting the post competition presentation of prizes. In total, three competitions were held - Juniors (U-16), Ladies and Men’s. 

The winners on the day were as follows:

K. Bird won the junior competition while Mary Ellen Leneghan was the ladies winner.

The winner of the Paddy Joe Goonan Memorial Cup was stalwart and legend, Pat Elvis Hayes, who posted a magnificent score of 37 points. Pat was closely followed by Padraic Ruddy, who posted the same score but who was piped on the back nine.

Congratulations to Pat and to all of our prize-winners on the day. The good news was that the day raised €1,200 for Scoil Naisiunta Dhumha Thuama MUGA Fund. Linda and her staff have extended míle buíochas to everybody for their support.

Kilcommon Lotto

There was no winner of the jackpot of €5,700 in the Kilcommon Community Development Lotto draw on August 24th when the numbers drawn were 6, 14, 31 and 33.

The house prize winner of €100 winner was Pat Garvin, Carrowteige and the two €30 offline winners were Margaret Cawley, Binghamstown and Sean Leneghan and Aoife Gibbons, Milltown. 

The two €30 online winners were Mags Deane-Smith, Cavan and Michael King, Aughoose. 

The latest jackpot was €5,800 when the draw was held in Belderrig Community Centre.

Cill Chomáin winners

Cill Chomáin GAA Club had three winners in the Cairde Mhaigh Eo Club Development Draw.

Congratulations to Brendan and Barbara Deane who won €1,000, Unsionn McGrath who won €500 and Ann and Eamon Moran who won €200.

Erris Darts 

The evenings are getting darker and that can only mean it's not long until the darts are back. 

The meeting for teams/venues wishing to be part of this coming season's league takes place Saturday, September 6th, at 7.30pm in Lavelle’s, Corclough.

Kiltane GAA News

There was no winner of the Kiltane GAA Club weekly lotto jackpot of €7,400 in the latest draw. 

The two €50 winners were Fr Jim Cribben and Paddy McHale, c/o the Corner House while Derek Cosgrove, Coolaba and Linda Conway, Glencastle both won €25. The two online winners were Colette Carey, Bangor (€50) and Paul Stack, Tallaghaun Duff (€25).

Bingo will take place in the GAA Complex in Bangor this evening, Tuesday, September 2nd, at 8pm. The jackpot will be €650 in 48 calls or less.

Erris Athletic Club 

Well done to Louie O’Connor who won silver at the Cairn Community Games National Finals recently in Carlow, representing Belmullet/Kilmore and Mayo. Louie participated in the U-8 60m sprint. 

Congratulations Louie from all at Erris AC!

Well done also to Emma Naughton who won gold at the Cairn Community Games National Finals in Carlow, representing Belmullet/Kilmore and Mayo. Emma participated in the U-14 javelin competition and threw an amazing 32 metres.

Sea Angling

The winners of the two-day beach competition organised recently by Belmullet Sea Angling Club were: 1st over two days, Shane Gilvarry (€200); 2nd, Tony Lally (€100); 3rd, two anglers who couldn’t be separated - Tim O’ Sullivan and Eoin Gilvarry (€50 each).

Best on Saturday: Shane Gilvarry (€50); Best on Sunday: Tony Lally; Longest fish over two days: Tony Lally (sponsored by Pat Ruddy).

Iorras Aontaithe fundraiser 

The Club Duck Race 2025 was held recently and congratulations to all the winners and a big thank you to the sponsors for their continuing support now and in the past.

A big thank you to the general public for supporting the fundraising event and all the club members and others for their assistance in selling/promoting, allso for supporting the efforts on Heritage Day and Lá an Logha.

Excellent Leaving Cert results

The school community of St Brendan’s College wishes to  congratulate Leaving Certificate student James Howe, who has been named the recipient of the Anne Staunton Award for Academic Excellence for 2025. This recognition follows his exceptional achievement of 577 points in the Leaving Certificate.

In addition, a number of James’s classmates also distinguished themselves by attaining results in excess of 550 points, significantly surpassing the national average and continuing the tradition of excellence in results achieved by students of St Brendan’s College.

Over at Our Lady's Secondary School, there were smiles all around as teachers welcomed back the Leaving Certificate students to celebrate their excellent results. The school is very proud of this exceptionally hard-working, talented, and kind group of young people who are sure to go on to achieve amazing things.

Congratulations to Rachel Boylan who is this year’s winner of the Mai Murphy Cup for achieving the highest results in the Leaving Certificate 2025.

Rachel achieved an outstanding total of 570 points and intends to study physiotherapy this autumn. She is also a proud past pupil of Belmullet National School.

Gaelcholáiste Chomáin were delighted to have an opportunity to celebrate with some of their Leaving Certificate students on their excellent results. The school is very proud of all the class of 2025 and wish them every success in the future. Their hard work has paid off. 

Darts competition 

The Michelle Gaughan Memorial Darts Competition will be held in the Broadhaven Bay Hotel on Sunday, September 14th. 

The doors are open from 12 noon and registration for the U-18 youths' event will be open until 12.45pm with the games starting at 1pm sharp. The entry fee is €5 with prizes for the semi-finalists, runner-up and winner.

The main event kicks off at 4.30pm sharp and registration opens from 3pm with no more names taken after 4.15pm. The entry fee is €10.

There are trophies and cash prizes for the semi-finalists, with the same plus dinner for two in the Western Strands and a night stay for two with breakfast included at the Wyatt Hotel Westport for the runner-up. The winner receives the coveted Michelle Gaughan Trophy, a cash prize, dinner for two in Nevins and a night’s stay for two with breakfast included at the Mariner Hotel in Westport. 

The format of both competitions on the day will be decided based on entries, but with 10 boards in use a great day of darts is in store. 

There is a raffle on the night in aid of Cara Iorrais and all spot prizes are greatly welcomed.
