The beautiful Cross beach was the venue for Belmullet Sea Angling Clubs 2 day beach competition recently. With very little surf and the incredible sun beaming all day, and no one complaining, a good variety of fish were caught including a fine 37 cm flounder by Cormac Burke from Killybegs Mariners. Fishing was marginally better around the corner on Drum beach on the day. A total of 82 fish were caught, recorded and released. Many thanks to the anglers who travelled from near and far for this 2 day competition in what is the 60th year since its formation. It is the on-going participation that makes it worthwhile.
Congratulations to all the winners and they were; overall winner: Billy Gilvarry; 2nd Darren Reynolds; 3rd Martin Carey; Best Angler Saturday Billy Gilvarry; Best Angler Sunday Martin Carey; Longest fish Martin Carey; Best Junior Angler Sally Gilvarry.

Erris Utd can reflect on another great season with back to back promotions and back to back divisional cups, but it was unfortunate they lost out to Killala after extra time recently and a single goal to deny Erris the league title. They can now look forward to life back in the Premier league after a number of years next season and their home and away encounters with Kilmore among many. Congratulations to the player panel and manager, Micheal McHale and his backroom team of Brendan Nallen and Micheal Meenaghan - roll on 2025.

Ballyglass RNLI came to the aid of a lone sailor recently after he experienced a health difficulty in the North Atlantic Sea. The all-weather lifeboat was requested to launch by Malin Head Coast Guard to assist the lone sailor on an 11meter yacht who was somewhat incapacitated by a knee injury. The yacht was located four miles north-west of Eagle Island off the North Mayo coast and approximately 14 nautical miles from the lifeboat station.
The volunteer crew received the alert from Malin Head Coast Guard just before 5pm and the lifeboat was underway shortly after under Coxswain James Mangan.
The weather conditions at the time were tricky with a small craft warning in place, a north-westerly wind force 5/6 and sea state choppy and swelly.
When the Ballyglass lifeboat with five crew on-board arrived on scene they assessed the situation and communicated with the sailor who was fit to sail into Broadhaven Bay single-handed but required help mooring.
The lifeboat proceeded to escort the yacht to calmer waters in Broadhaven Bay where it was safe for one of the volunteer crew to be transferred to the casualty vessel to bring her to the nearest safe moorings at Ballyglass pier.
There, the lifeboat crew were met by Ballyglass Coast Guard Unit and the ambulance service who took over the care of the casualty once ashore.
Speaking following the call out, Ballyglass RNLI Coxswain James Mangan said: ‘We were pleased with the safe return of all and we would like to wish the sailor well and commend and thank our colleagues from the ambulance service and Ballyglass Coast Guard Unit and our own shore crew.’ Crew on this call out included Coxswain James Mangan, mechanic Allen Murray, navigator Stephen Togher and crew members John Gaughan, Pat Coyne and Seán Reilly.
