Local Notes: Enniscrone U14 girls secure first win of Connacht campaign
 Jesus and Mary Secondary School U14 girls Gaelic team battled the elements to secure their first win of the Connacht campaign, at St John's pitch on Monday, January 22.
On Saturday, January 20, Clean Coasts hosted a community event in Enniscrone, Co. Sligo, as part of the annual Clean Coasts Roadshow series, warmly welcomed by the local residents. This year’s Clean Coasts Roadshow for Co. Sligo was organised in collaboration with Sligo County Councils’ ‘Community Climate Action Fund’. The event was a great success, combining a series of talks along key points in the village, with the aim of highlighting environmental funding opportunities for communities and coastal projects taking place in the region. The event was well attended, with great representation from the local Enniscrone Clean Coasts group, who gave an informative talk on the history of the local castle, and their efforts to conserve it from further ruin.
The Clean Coasts Roadshow is a series of informative talks and workshops tailored for coastal communities across Ireland, taking place between January and May each year. This initiative brings together individuals interested in protecting their local beaches, seas, and marine environments.
The death occurred of Sean Hannan, Lower Main Street, Enniscrone, peacefully at Mayo University Hospital, Castlebar. She was predeceased by his parents Elizabeth and Frank, brother Tom and sister Joan. He is beloved husband of Meta and loving father of Dermot (Dundalk) and Jean (Dublin). He will be sadly missed by his wife, son, daughter, brothers Gerard (UK), Frank (Ballyshannon) and Donal (Kells), sister Mary Ryan (Dublin), Dermot’s partner Beata, Jean’s partner Patrick, grandchildren Aoife, Eoin, Eimear and Maebh, son-in-law Chris O’Dowd, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.
Sean reposed at his residence on Tuesday evening, January 23, from 4 to 7pm. The funeral arrived to the Church of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven, Enniscrone, on Wednesday, January 24, for 1.30pm Requiem Mass followed by burial in St Patrick’s Cemetery, Kilglass. May his gentle soul rest in peace.
The Kilglass Enniscrone Utd FC U13B team had a super win on Saturday, January 20, in tough conditions against a good Benbulben team. Benbulben playing with a strong breeze got off to a flying start with a goal in the first 3 minutes. The Enniscrone lads dug in deep and got a deserved equaliser just before halftime.
With the wind on the Kilglass Enniscrone lads backs in the 2nd half they pushed on and went into a 4-1 lead. Benbulben never gave up and came back with another goal near the end. The final results was Kilglass Enniscrone FC 4, Benbulben 2.
A senior school review of results at Jesus and Mary Secondary School, Enniscrone, informs their planning for the following year. Some of the recent outstanding successes at senior level included: two scholarships for exceptional results – All Ireland and University entrance; Leaving Cert students of 2023 had excellent results; students were highly successful at QQ1 level 5, 6 and 7 in 8 courses; successful apprenticeships for over 10% of leaving certs; most of the school leavers continue with chosen 3rd level courses to completion; range of subjects and levels available, result in a huge variety of careers; past students cherish a work-life balance and continued support from school friends and the JM International community; colleges, universities, employers, instructors etc give feedback of mature, confident communicators with an enthusiasm for learning new skills.

West Sligo Young at Heart, Dromore West, started the year moving with Grainne McGowan and chair yoga every Tuesday in January from 11am to 12 noon. Wednesday meetings commenced on January 17, with a good chat and catch up and they will continue every Wednesday from 10.30 to 12.30. Walking football has commenced on Mondays from 11am to 12 noon and on Wednesday, January 24, Karen was back with food and nutrition.
The club have lots of new things planned for 2024 such as; calligraphy, cooking, willow weaving, sewing and crochet and always tea and a chat.
Save the date, as Easter is early this year and Tireragh Community Support Ltd are putting the word out in good time. The annual Easter Egg Hunt and Family Day will be held on Easter Sunday, March 31, from 12 noon to 3pm in Kilglass House F26 H685. This is strictly a ticket event only. Stand Strong for Women’s Aid beach yoga hosted by Niamh Glacken, Roots Wellness, will be held on Enniscrone beach on February 5, at 10am. A warming yoga class will be held on the beach and during it a warrior pose will be held for 3 minutes to stand up for domestic violence. All money raised from this event will go directly towards Women’s Aid to help support women in Ireland subjected to domestic violence.
Keep in mind it is February, so may well be cold and wet but the class will go ahead whatever the weather, so wrap up nice and warm. You will need to bring a yoga mat, warm clothing, change of clothes (in case it rains) and water to drink.

Niamh also encourages the men to join also and stand up for the women in their lives.
The Table Tennis Roadshow taster session takes place in The Courthouse, Easkey, today, Tuesday, January 30, with session 1 from 5 to 5.45pm and session 2, 5.45 to 6.30pm. It will consist of fun games and activities, bat and balls skills, learning basic technique and rules, ie scoring. The purpose of the taster session is to introduce the sport to people of all ages in communities across Sligo.
Table tennis can be played as a social, fun game for physical and mental wellbeing, and is also a very competitive sport in the world. Through participating in table tennis, participants can enhance self-confidence, improve hand and eye co-ordination, focus, agility and reflexes. It will help create active schools and communities and is a sport for life.

The Dementia Inclusive Social Club will meeting in Skreen/Dromard Community Centre on January 31, from 2.30 to 4.30pm. Western Gaels Hurling and Camogie Club have embarked on its own adventure to develop the first hurling and camogie home grounds in Co Sligo, and they are giving you an incredible opportunity to pack your bags and travel anywhere in the world all for €25 per ticket as a fundraiser. They are limiting the number of tickets to 7500 so buy early to avoid disappointment. Eoghan Rua Ladies Football Club are organising a fundraising event on Friday, February 2 (bank holiday weekend) with Ruaile Buaile in the Ocean Sands Hotel. Bingo is held in the Old Church, Enniscrone, every Tuesday at 8pm with doors opening at 7pm with free tea and coffee on offer. The proceeds are in aid of Western Gaels Hurling and Camogie Club. All are welcome to come along and support and be in with a chance to win.
The Buggy Buddies programme with Bernie Finley, in conjunction with Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership, is held on Wednesday mornings at 9.45am for a walk at 10am. The cost is €2 per session and the group meet at the Enniscrone Family Resource Centre. There will be indoor activities in the centre if conditions are too wet. All are welcome to come and join for a walk, a cuppa and chat.
The total amount raised to date at the Easkey New Years Day Swim is €1543.20. The organisers extend thanks to all who joined for the swim and to everyone who donated to the bucket collection. The monies were split between AWARE and UNICEF.
